The Portuguese Language Department at the Faculty of Al-Alsun, Ain Shams University, organized a distinguished celebration to mark World Portuguese Language Day. This event, held under the auspices of Ain Shams University, the Camões Language Institute in Portugal, and the Portuguese Embassy in Cairo, reflects the program's commitment to fostering cultural exchange and raising awareness of the cultures of Portuguese-speaking countries.
The celebration was attended by Prof. Yumna Safwat, Acting Dean of the Faculty of Al-Alsun; Assistant Prof. Reham Ezzat, Acting Head of the Portuguese Language Department; Ms. Irma González, Cultural Attaché at the Portuguese Embassy in Cairo; and Professor Sofia Suleiman and Professor Ennis Guibero, from faculty staff.
Prof. Yumna Safwat affirmed that the Faculty of Al-Alsun continues its role in building bridges of cultural and civilizational communication with various peoples of the world through scientific and cultural activities that open new horizons for students and contribute to building an academic personality aware of global cultures and capable of interacting with them professionally and openly.
The ceremony included a puppet show in Portuguese presented by artist Claudio Orchmann and artist Carlotta Blanc. The show explored Portuguese Fado art, along with the story of "Ulysses" and the Trojan War, inspired by the Iliad and the Odyssey, in a rich artistic and cultural experience that combined literature, music, and theater, and presented students with a vivid picture of Portuguese heritage and the cultural identity of the Lusovan world.
The celebration also witnessed significant participation from students across all four cohorts of the Portuguese Language and Literature program, reflecting the department's commitment to connecting academic study with cultural and humanistic knowledge, and enhancing students' awareness of Portuguese-speaking cultures. This, in turn, supports their language skills and deepens their understanding of global cultural diversity.
