Ain Shams University Receives the External Review Delegation for the EU-Funded GEMS-TECH Project within the Framework of Promoting Green Maritime Navigation

As part of its follow-up on the implementation of international cooperation projects and its efforts to strengthen academic partnerships with European universities and institutions, Ain Shams University received the external review delegation of European partners for the GEMS-TECH project, titled “Perspectives of Green Maritime Navigation, Collaborative Innovation, and Sustainable Technologies,” funded by the European Union’s Erasmus+ Programme, during the period from 14 to 16 December, to review the progress of the project in Egypt.

The delegation was received by Prof. Amany Osama Kamel, Vice President of the University for Graduate Studies and Research, in the presence of Prof. Neveen Assem, Chief Executive Officer of the Innovation and Training Sector and Project Director at Ain Shams University; Prof. Walid El-Khatam, Professor of Renewable Energy at the Faculty of Engineering and Principal Investigator of the project; and Prof. Mohamed Abdel Aziz, Vice Dean of the Faculty of Engineering for Education and Student Affairs.

The review delegation comprised an international committee from several European countries, including Bulgaria, Greece, Croatia, and Estonia. The committee reviewed the project’s objectives, which focus on developing curricula at the Faculty of Engineering and establishing specialized training programs through the Innovation and Training Sector in the field of shipbuilding based on renewable energy sources, in support of the transition toward green maritime navigation and in alignment with sustainable development requirements.

The visit included a review of achievements under the project’s activities, as well as an inspection of the facilities of the Innovation and Training Sector, including training halls and specialized laboratories, and an overview of the equipment and infrastructure supporting the implementation of advanced training programs.

The delegation also visited the Zafaran Museum, where they were received by Dr. Walaa El-Din Badawy, Museum Director, along with museum curators and officials from public relations and community outreach. The tour included museum exhibition halls featuring artifacts and collections documenting Egypt’s historical significance from ancient times through the Islamic era, in addition to items from the Muhammad Ali Dynasty, reflecting the university’s rich cultural and civilizational dimension.

It is worth noting that the visit program includes, on its second day, a field visit to the Arab Academy for Science, Technology and Maritime Transport in Abu Qir, Alexandria, as one of the project’s key partners. The third day includes a visit to the Faculty of Engineering at Ain Shams University to inspect laboratories and hold meetings with students and faculty members, as well as representatives of industry partners involved in curriculum development. This aims to enhance integration between academic education and labor market needs and underscores the university’s role in supporting innovation and leading sustainable solutions.
