In light of Egypt’s recent accession to the Horizon Europe program, and on the occasion of the platinum anniversary of the EU–Egypt Science, Technology and Innovation Agreement, the Delegation of the European Union to Egypt is organizing the EU–Egypt Research & Innovation Week (R&I Week), which aims to build and deepen cooperation in the fields of science, technology, and innovation.
The event will showcase a range of ongoing cooperation models between both sides to strengthen institutional, academic, and private-sector links.
To support this event, the DAAD Regional Office in Cairo, through the DAAD Academy Cairo, is organizing several workshops designed to enhance the capacity of Egyptian researchers in writing research proposals, enabling them to prepare strong and competitive submissions for Horizon Europe calls, as well as to acquire the skills needed for building international partnerships within consortia.
Through a series of short modules, DAAD trainers will present the following topics:
- Proposal writing for EU grants
- How to build an international network
- Criteria for successful communication with academic and research partners in Germany
- The German research landscape and funding opportunities
By the end of the workshop, participants will be able to:
- Navigate Horizon Europe work programs and understand evaluation criteria.
- Understand the proposal life cycle: identifying the call, forming the consortium, writing and submitting the proposal, evaluation, grant preparation, and project start.
- Understand budgeting principles in Horizon Europe, including cost categories, eligible costs, and budget formulation.
- Develop a strong proposal idea directly aligned with the call topic.
- Structure and write the three core sections of Horizon Europe proposals (Excellence – Impact – Implementation).
- Integrate cross-cutting issues such as gender, open science, exploitation pathways, and alignment with EU policies.
- Build and manage strong international consortia.
- Apply best practices and lessons learned from successful European proposals.
- Understand the role and importance of international networks in academic careers and institutional development.
- Prepare plans for identifying and engaging potential international partners.
- Enhance communication and negotiation skills for effective partnerships.
- Use digital tools and platforms (ResearchGate, LinkedIn, ORCID, professional associations) to expand professional networks and global reach.
