“Your Practical Guide to Research Project Funding and International Scholarships” ... A Workshop at the Faculty of Archaeology

Under the patronage of Prof. Mohamed Diaa Zain El-Abedeen, President of Ain Shams University, and Prof. Hesham Tantawi, Dean of the Faculty of Archaeology, the faculty held a workshop titled: “Your Practical Guide to Research Project Funding and International Scholarships”, with the participation of a distinguished group of faculty staff and teaching assistants who have practical experience in obtaining study scholarships and research projects abroad.

The workshop was presented by: Dr. Mohamed Ibrahim Abdel Aal, Assistant Professor of Islamic Archaeology, Dr. Ahmed Naqshara, Lecturer in Site Management, Dr. Nouran Hamed, Lecturer in Heritage Management, and Mr. Islam Ezzat, Assistant Lecturer in Museum Management and Project Management.

The workshop witnessed a strong attendance from faculty staff and teaching assistants, as well as a large number of postgraduate students in the diploma and master's stages, along with researchers and faculty staff from the Faculties of Archaeology, Arts, and the Faculty of Girls at Ain Shams University and Cairo University. Additionally, researchers from the Project Sector and the Egyptian and Islamic Archaeology Sectors of the Supreme Council of Antiquities, and Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities, participated.

The workshop covered several important topics, including the scientific methodology for drafting research project proposals and international scholarships, and how to differentiate between types of research proposals (Proposals Statement and Synthesis).

It also addressed defining the research problem, formulating the research question, writing the motivational letter for grant applications, and the criteria used by funding agencies to evaluate proposals. Additionally, the workshop provided an overview of the general framework for selecting appropriate research scholarships and scholarships.

During the session, key international organizations offering research and study scholarships in the field of archaeology were highlighted, including: The French Institute of Eastern Archaeology, The German Archaeological Institute, The Dominican Institute, The German International Cooperation Agency (GIZ), The British Council, and The Dutch-Flemish Institute of Archaeology

The workshop concluded with a practical session on how to apply for two specific research project scholarships related to master’s and postdoctoral studies.
