The symposium commenced on Thursday, April 2, 2026, at the Franciscan Cultural Center in Cairo, as part of a fruitful academic collaboration between the Faculty of Archaeology, the Franciscan Cultural Center, the Italian Cultural Institute, and the Italian Archaeological Center.
The symposium was attended by a distinguished group of faculty staff, researchers, and graduate students interested in archaeology and ancient civilizations. The specialized lectures offered in-depth analytical readings of the significance of the sea throughout history.
The participants explored the multifaceted dimensions of the sea, from its practical and navigational uses in the lives of ancient peoples to its symbolic, religious, and philosophical significance, which imbued it with a mythical character. It appeared in ancient arts and literature as a symbol of passage, transformation, and cultural exchange, and as a stage for imagination and human conflict.
The symposium concluded with an interactive discussion session that enriched the scholarly discourse and contributed to the exchange of perspectives among the participants. This session underscored the pioneering role of the Faculty of Archaeology at Ain Shams University in supporting scientific research, fostering academic collaboration, and opening new horizons for specialized studies.
