Under the patronage of Prof. Mohamed Diaa Zain El-Abedeen, President of Ain Shams University, and Prof. Ghada Farouk, Vice President for Community Service and Environmental Development and Chair of the Board of the Middle East Research and Future Studies Center, and on the occasion of the 43rd anniversary of Sinai Liberation Day, the Middle East Research and Future Studies Center, in collaboration with the Faculty of Arts, held a seminar titled “Events in the Taba Crisis of 1910–1911 Through Ottoman Turkish Documents.”
The seminar featured the participation of Prof. Mohamed Abdel Latif Haredi, former Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Professor of the Turkish Language.
The event was opened by Dr. Hatem El-Abd, Director of the Center, who welcomed the attendees and extended his gratitude to Prof. Hanan Kamel, Dean of the Faculty of Arts, for her continuous support of the Center and her efforts in fostering collaboration on all levels. He also expressed his pleasure at hosting one of the pioneers in Turkish language studies, to whom great credit is owed for the recovery of Taba, thanks to his translation of historical Turkish and Ottoman documents that provided irrefutable evidence of Egypt’s rightful claim to the land.
Prof. Mohamed Haredi then took the floor, offering a deep dive into the background and intricacies of the preparations for the 1987 arbitration process that led to the recovery of Taba. He highlighted the role of a specialized committee composed of prominent Egyptian intellectuals and scholars from relevant fields. Dr. Haredi also presented a substantial collection of Turkish and Ottoman documents that he translated, documents which Egypt relied on throughout the arbitration rounds to prove its full sovereignty over Sinai, culminating in the rightful return of Taba to Egyptian territory.
