As part of the Graduate Studies and Research Sector’s commitment to establishing the ethics of scientific research in various aspects of the university’s research system, and to emphasizing adherence to ethical standards for conducting scientific research and experiments on animals, Ain Shams University formed the Ain Shams University Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC).
This came under the patronage of Prof. Mohamed Diaa Zain El-Abedeen, President of the University, and Prof. Amany Osama Kamel, Vice President of the University for Graduate Studies and Research, and under the chairmanship of Prof. Ibtihal El Demerdash Zaki, Professor and Head of the Department of Pharmacology and Toxicology at the Faculty of Pharmacy, and with the membership of an elite group of faculty staff from a number of the university’s faculties, including Medicine, Veterinary Medicine, Science, Girls, and Education.
The committee aims to develop internal guidelines that regulate the conduct of research experiments on animals in accordance with international standards and the guidelines of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), and to ensure the ethical and humane treatment of animals within research projects, in addition to reviewing and approving research protocols that involve the use of animals, and monitoring ongoing research to ensure compliance with ethical and scientific standards, as well as compliance with laws and regulations governing the use of animals in scientific research locally and internationally, and to supervise animal house facilities in the various faculties of the university, and to train and qualify employees to deal with animals in accordance with ethical and scientific standards.
