In a new achievement reflecting the leadership of Ain Shams University in the fields of innovation and advanced technology, the “SunGuardians” team from the Faculty of Engineering at Ain Shams University secured first place in the local qualifiers of the Global HackAtom Egypt 2026 competition, organized by Rosatom in cooperation with the Nuclear Power Plants Authority, during the competitions hosted by the Bibliotheca Alexandrina on May 22–23, 2026.

The victory came after strong competition among 11 teams comprising 88 students from several Egyptian universities, including Cairo, Alexandria, Helwan, Canadian, Russian, Kafr El-Sheikh, and Matrouh universities. The Ain Shams University team attracted attention with an advanced innovative project in the field of robotics related to nuclear energy.

The team presented an innovative engineering project based on the use of robotic systems to reduce the impact of jellyfish on water intake systems at coastal nuclear power plants, contributing to maintaining the efficiency of cooling systems within nuclear facilities. The project reflected the students’ ability to employ modern technology to address real-world challenges affecting the future of energy.

The winning team included a distinguished group of students from various disciplines, reflecting the integration between engineering and technological sciences:
Youssef Mohamed Attia – Electrical Power Engineering (Team Leader), Abdelrahman Mahmoud – Electrical Power Engineering, Youssef Mohamed Youssef – Mechanical Power Engineering, Sarah Nasser El-Refaie – Renewable Energy Engineering, Amin Mostafa Fadel – Mechatronics Engineering, Adham Fayez – Mechatronics Engineering, Youssef El-Naggar – Mechatronics Engineering, and Basma Mostafa El-Sayed – Computer Science.

The competition featured an intensive 24-hour technical challenge under the theme “Robotic Systems in Nuclear Energy,” aiming to encourage students to develop advanced engineering solutions that support the future of nuclear energy and smart technologies.

With this achievement, the Ain Shams University team officially qualified to represent Egypt in the international finals of the competition, scheduled to take place in Russia next September, marking another step that confirms the university students’ ability to compete globally and achieve an honorable Egyptian presence at international forums.
