In line with its commitment to linking academic study with practical applications, Faculty of Law - Ain Shams University organized— in cooperation with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs— a discussion session titled “The Nature of Diplomatic Work and Mechanisms for Joining the Diplomatic Corps,” held under the patronage of Prof. Mohamed Diaa Zain El-Abedeen, President of Ain Shams University, Prof. Rami Maher Sadiq, Vice President for Education and Student Affairs, Prof. Yassin El-Shazly, Dean of the Faculty, and Prof. Mohamed Ibrahim El-Shafei, Vice Dean for Education and Student Affairs.

The event began with a welcoming speech delivered by Prof. Yassin El-Shazly, who welcomed Ambassador Dr. Yasser Alawi, Assistant Minister of Foreign Affairs and Director of the Diplomatic Studies Institute and the Political Studies Institute. He praised the role of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in raising diplomatic awareness among law students.
He also highlighted that the Faculty of Law at Ain Shams University is one of the pioneering faculties that has contributed to graduating many distinguished cadres who joined the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, including former Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry, reflecting the faculty’s standing and its role in preparing national competencies for diplomatic work.
The session was attended by Ambassador Dr. Yasser Alawi, Assistant Minister of Foreign Affairs and Director of the Diplomatic Studies Institute; Professor Dr. Yassin El-Shazly, Professor of Commercial Law and Dean of the Faculty; Attaché Dr. Mostafa Bahgat from the Diplomatic Studies Institute; and Attaché Lamia Abdel Hamid from the International Legal Affairs and Treaties Sector.
It was also attended by Prof. Maha Ramadan Batikh, Assistant Professor of Civil Law and Director of the Scientific Publishing Unit, and Dr. Omar Ramadan, Lecturer in Criminal Law and Director of the Faculty’s Training Court, along with a number of faculty members and assistants, and a large number of students, reflecting their strong interest in diplomatic careers and related opportunities.
During the session, Ambassador Dr. Yasser Alawi discussed the nature of diplomatic work, outlining the duties and responsibilities of diplomats, as well as explaining the procedures and requirements for joining the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and the skills needed for those aspiring to enter this field.
The session also featured insightful contributions from Attaché Dr. Mostafa Bahgat and Attaché Lamia Abdel Hamid, who shared their personal experiences in joining the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, detailing the stages they went through—from application and examinations to joining the diplomatic corps—along with challenges they faced and how they overcame them, offering practical advice to students.
At the end of the session, the floor was opened for student questions, which covered topics such as the nature of diplomatic work, requirements for success in the field, and career prospects within the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The Ambassador responded thoroughly, enriching the discussion and enhancing the audience’s understanding.
The event concluded with a recognition ceremony, where Prof. Yassin El-Shazly presented a commemorative shield from Faculty of Law - Ain Shams University to Ambassador Dr. Yasser Alawi in appreciation of his valuable contribution.
On the sidelines of the visit, the Ambassador toured the faculty’s new lecture halls, where he reviewed the recent infrastructure and educational developments, praising the modern facilities that support the learning process and student preparation.
The event also included a meeting with Professor Konstantinos Kaliris, Professor at the University of Essex, who was welcomed by both the Dean of the Faculty and the Ambassador, highlighting the importance of strengthening academic cooperation and international exchange of expertise.
