The Faculty of Agriculture holds a conference on climate change and livestock

In light of the climate change that the world is witnessing and its effects on agriculture, the Animal and Poultry Production Program at the Faculty of Agriculture, Ain Shams University, organized the Climate Change and Livestock Conference, under the auspices of Prof. Dr. Mahmoud El-Meteini, President of Ain Shams University, and Prof. Ahmed Galal El-Sayed, Dean of the Faculty of Agriculture and President Conference, Conference Coordinator Prof. Dr. Faisal Bayoumi Abdel Salam Professor of Poultry Physiology.

And in the presence of a supervisor of animal and poultry production professors, professors from the Animal Production Research Institute, the Desert Research Center, the Regional Center for Nutrition and Fodder, and students of the animal and poultry production program at the Faculty.

The session was opened by Prof. Dr. Ahmed Galal, Dean of the Faculty and President of the Conference. Galal stressed the keenness of Ain Shams University, headed by Prof. Dr. Mahmoud El-Meteini stressed the contribution to the sustainable development plan and Egypt's vision in 2030, and that the conference coincides with Egypt's preparation to host the World Summit on Climate Change "COP 27" from 6 to 18 November in Sharm El-Sheikh.

         
   
         

As Prof. Dr. Ahmed Jalal mentioned the concept of climate change and the reasons for the emergence of carbon emissions and greenhouse gases led to the formation of a layer of gases outside and inside the atmosphere that resulted in a rise in the temperature of the planet and the impact of these changes on the agricultural sector and then the animal and poultry production sector and how they affect and be affected by climate change and challenges He pointed out that we must manage the risks resulting from this change, while at the same time seizing the available new opportunities, stimulating the private sector, and taking development paths that are more environmentally friendly.

Prof. Dr. Mohamed El-Shafei, a member of the Union of Poultry Producers, pointed out the importance of the poultry industry in providing the needs of animal protein the Egyptian citizen and the challenges facing this industry.

As discussed by Prof. Dr. Hamdi Moussa, Professor of Animal Nutrition, and Dr. Abdel Raouf El-Gohary, animal production expert, the impact of climate change on animal production, and a recommendation to open new development axes in East El Oweinat and Lake Nasser, due to the availability of water needed to grow basic crops for animal and poultry feed production.

   
   

The conference also discussed the impact of climate change on fish production through a lecture by Prof. Dr. Mohamed Fathi Othman, professor of fish nutrition and former head of the Fisheries Authority, stressing the importance of fish farming in meeting the nutritional need for protein. Dr. Mohamed El-Shafei, a member of the Union of Poultry Producers, pointed out the importance of the poultry industry in providing the needs of animal protein to Egyptian citizen and the challenges facing this industry.

Several sessions were held on the sidelines of the conference revolving around the impact of climate change on biodiversity through a lecture by Prof. Dr. Atef Mohamed Kamel, Vice Dean of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Ain Shams University.

Prof. Dr. Abdel Rahman Youssef, Professor of Poultry Nutrition, explained new Strategies for Poultry Feeding in the Light of the Feed Raw Materials Crisis.

Prof. Dr. Faisal Bayoumi Abdel Salam, professor of poultry physiology and conference coordinator pointed out the most important recommendations of the conference, which came as follows:

1- Expanding the cultivation of basic crops that are used in the manufacture of animal and poultry feed, especially yellow corn and soybeans.

2- Develop a mechanism to improve local breeds of animals and poultry to adapt them to the environment and to withstand climatic changes.

3- Establishing a mechanism to preserve fish farming, especially in the coastal governorates, which are the most productive of fish, which are expected to be severely affected by climate change.
