Dr. Hesham Omran, Assistant Professor in the Department of Electronics and Communications Engineering, Faculty of Engineering: Artificial Intelligence Systems Face Immense Challenges in Electricity Consumption

Dr. Hesham Abdel Salam Ahmed Omran, Assistant Professor in the Department of Electronics and Communications Engineering, at the Faculty of Engineering, Ain Shams University, and recipient of the 2023 UNESCO-Fozan International Prize for Artificial Intelligence, participated in the World Summit of Scientists.

Prof. Omran's participation was among a distinguished gathering of international scientists and experts, including Nobel laureates and recipients of other prestigious international scientific awards.

During his presentation, Dr. Hisham Omran emphasized that artificial intelligence (AI) is a powerful tool that has transformed most aspects of our lives and serves as an effective assistant to scientists. However, he stressed the need to distinguish between conventional science and revolutionary science, noting that while AI can solve problems within established frameworks, it cannot think outside of them.

Omran concluded by stating that AI systems face enormous challenges in electricity consumption, to the point of straining power grids. Therefore, comparing AI to the human brain remains unfair due to this vast difference in energy efficiency.

The forum discussed the growing role of artificial intelligence in accelerating scientific research and supporting major discoveries across various fields, while emphasizing that the human mind remains the primary driver of creativity and innovation. It also addressed several challenges associated with AI technologies, most notably energy consumption and the efficiency of smart systems.

This participation reflects the prestigious scientific standing of Ain Shams University and its Faculty of Engineering, and their leadership in supporting scientific research and encouraging their young scientists to actively participate in international forums, thus contributing to strengthening the university's role in serving the causes of science and sustainable development.
