The Launch of the joint teaching initiative between the Faculty of Law, Ain Shams University, and the School of Law, University of Essex, UK

Under the patronage of Prof. Mohamed Diaa Zain El-Abedeen, President of Ain Shams University, the joint teaching initiative was launched between the Faculty of Law, Ain Shams University (English Credit Hour Program), and the School of Law, University of Essex (UK), in implementation of the cooperation protocol between the two universities.

In preparation for the start of implementation and to discuss the final arrangements, Prof. Yassin El Shazly, Dean of the Faculty of Law, Ain Shams University, received Dr. Konstantinos Kalliris, Professor of Criminal Law at the University of Essex, on Sunday, November 9, 2025. The meeting was attended by Prof. Dr. Mohamed Ibrahim El Shafie, Vice Dean for Education and Student Affairs, and Prof. Hossam Ahmed El Attar, Director of the English Program.

The Faculty of Law at Ain Shams University has taken the lead in applying the joint teaching model between Egyptian and British universities, as this represents the first experience of its kind among law faculties in Egyptian universities. The first step in implementation included a series of lectures delivered by Dr. Konstantinos Kalliris, eight hours in total, within the Criminology and Punishment course for first-year students and the Criminal Law course for second-year students in the English Credit Hour Program, in collaboration with Dr. Ahmed Fathy Khalifa, Lecturer of Criminal Law at the Faculty of Law, Ain Shams University.

This collaboration is part of a mutual agreement between the two institutions to teach portions of the curriculum using the educational materials and academic methods adopted by the University of Essex, with these portions included in students’ final assessments. This approach aims to enhance students’ academic skills and provide them with educational experiences aligned with international standards. The partnership is the result of the dedicated efforts of the International Cooperation Office at the Faculty of Law, led by Dr. Ahmed Khalifa, Director of the Office, and Dr. Basma Adel, Deputy Director.

Prof. Yassin El Shazly emphasized that this step marks a new milestone in the academic development of the faculty, noting that the collaboration with the University of Essex aligns with the university’s vision of expanding international partnerships and improving the quality of legal education offered to students.

For his part, Dr. Konstantinos Kalliris expressed his pleasure in participating in this distinguished initiative and his eagerness to further strengthen academic and research collaboration between the two universities in various fields of law, contributing to the exchange of expertise and the enhancement of academic cooperation between Egypt and the United Kingdom.
