Under the patronage of Prof. Mohamed Diaa Zain El-Abedeen, President of Ain Shams University, Prof. Ali El-Anwar, Dean of the Faculty of Medicine and Chairman of the University Hospitals Board, and Prof. Tarek Youssef, Executive Director of University Hospitals, Ain Shams University Hospitals successfully saved the life of Hanin Islam Azmy, a two-and-a-half-year-old girl, after she sustained severe injuries from an attack by a stray dog on September 2nd.
The child was admitted to the hospital emergency department suffering from multiple deep lacerations on her face and lower lips, in addition to a deep wound on her left thigh and a fracture in her lower jaw.
Immediately, Dr. Tarek Youssef, Executive Director of Ain Shams University Hospitals, and Dr. Essam Fakhry, General Manager of El-Demerdash Surgical Hospital, instructed the specialized medical team in plastic, maxillofacial, and reconstructive surgery to intervene urgently.
The case was managed by Dr. Ahmed Ali Hassan, Head of the Department of Plastic, Maxillofacial, and Reconstructive Surgery, who performed the initial surgery according to the Ministry of Health protocol for dog bite cases. This included partial wound closure and temporary stabilization of the lower jaw, along with administration of antirabies serum to prevent viral infections caused by dog bites.
After receiving care in the plastic surgery department, the child underwent a second surgery seven days later, the safe interval period, which involved advanced cosmetic repair of the wounds and final fixation of the jaw fracture, with the participation of Dr. Hany Fouad, Lecturer of Plastic Surgery.
The child was discharged from the hospital in stable condition, showing significant improvement in facial appearance. Dr. Ahmed Ali Hassan explained that the child will later undergo laser cosmetic sessions to completely remove the scars and fully restore the natural appearance of her face.
