Prof. Mohamed Diaa Zain El-Abedeen, President of Ain Shams University, received this morning Mr. Nikolaos Papageorgiou, the Greek Ambassador in Cairo, to discuss ways of enhancing academic and cultural cooperation between the two sides.
The meeting was attended by Professor Dr. Hanan Metwally, Dean of the Faculty of Arts; Prof. Sherweit El-Ahmady, Director of the International Students Administration and representative of the International Relations Sector; Prof. Naglaa Mahmoud Ezzat, Head of the Department of Ancient European Civilizations and Languages at the Faculty of Arts; and Dr. Khaled El-Sherbiny, Lecturer of Modern Greek Language at the department.
At the outset, the University President welcomed the Greek Ambassador, emphasizing the deep-rooted historical ties between Egypt and Greece. He pointed out that Ain Shams University, as one of the oldest and largest Egyptian universities, has a long record of cooperation with Greek universities. He also reviewed the history and faculties of the university, highlighting that its mission is not limited to education alone, but also extends to community service and supporting sustainable development goals.

The President affirmed Ain Shams University’s keenness to build bridges of academic and cultural cooperation with educational institutions both inside and outside Egypt, thereby enhancing its leading regional and international position.
For his part, the Greek Ambassador expressed his appreciation for Ain Shams University and its distinguished role in teaching the Greek language and culture, as well as its wide range of scientific and research disciplines. He noted his aspiration for further fruitful cooperation that would strengthen the historical and cultural ties between the Egyptian and Greek peoples.
During the meeting, it was emphasized that the Department of Ancient European Civilizations and Languages at the Faculty of Arts is one of the largest departments among Egyptian universities, offering students the opportunity to study European civilizations and cultures alongside languages, most notably the Greek language. Discussions also addressed ways of supporting and developing cooperation between the department and the Greek Embassy in Cairo.
Both sides further discussed prospects of cooperation between Ain Shams University and Greek universities in the areas of student and research exchange, dual academic degrees, as well as enhancing Greek language teaching programs and expanding academic collaboration in ways that serve the strategic relations between the two countries.
