Ain Shams University strengthens its international presence in Africa through a strategic partnership to combat cancer and develop scientific research across the continent

In a renewed affirmation of the growing international standing of Ain Shams University and its leading role in supporting scientific and medical cooperation at both regional and international levels, Prof. Hesham El-Ghazaly, Director of the MASRI Center for Medical Research at the Faculty of Medicine, Ain Shams University, and President of the Egyptian Cancer Society, signed a Memorandum of Understanding between the Egyptian Cancer Society (ECS) and the African Organization for Research and Training in Cancer (AORTIC), on the sidelines of the Africa Health ExCon 2026 conference, one of the largest health and medical gatherings on the African continent.

This agreement embodies the pivotal role played by Ain Shams University in leading cross-border research and medical initiatives, and in strengthening Egypt’s position as a regional hub for scientific research, medical education, and specialized healthcare, particularly in the field of oncology.

The Memorandum of Understanding was signed in the presence of Dr. Céssaltina Lorenzoni, President of the African Organisation for Research and Training in Cancer (AORTIC), with the aim of expanding the horizons of cooperation between scientific and medical institutions across Africa in the fields of scientific research, medical training, capacity building, curriculum development, and the exchange of expertise and knowledge. This collaboration is expected to contribute to improving the quality of healthcare provided to cancer patients across African countries.

Prof. Hesham El-Ghazaly emphasized that this agreement represents a model of African scientific integration adopted by Ain Shams University through its research centers and experts, noting that addressing complex health challenges—foremost among them cancer—requires strategic partnerships based on scientific research, innovation, and knowledge exchange among leading institutions across the continent.

He added that the MASRI Center for Medical Research at Ain Shams University continues to expand its network of international and regional partnerships, enhancing opportunities for conducting multicenter research, developing continuing medical education programs, and training medical and research personnel. This, he noted, contributes to improving prevention, diagnosis, and treatment services, ultimately raising patients’ quality of life.

The signing ceremony was attended by a distinguished group of medical and scientific leaders from Egypt and various African countries, reflecting growing confidence in Egyptian expertise and the leading role played by Ain Shams University in supporting the health and development agenda across the continent.

For her part, Dr. Céssaltina Lorenzoni affirmed that Egypt represents a leading model in the fields of cancer control, scientific research, and medical education, praising the role of Egyptian academic and medical institutions—headed by Ain Shams University—in supporting capacity building and enhancing scientific cooperation among African nations.

This agreement comes within a vision aimed at strengthening African integration in scientific research and healthcare and consolidating the role of Ain Shams University as an influential international partner in developing the continent’s healthcare system. It also supports medical innovation efforts and enhances access to more efficient and sustainable healthcare services for African societies.
