The Department of Medical Genetics at the Faculty of Medicine, Ain Shams University, organized a comprehensive scientific and awareness event to mark the International Rare Disease Day, in collaboration with the Egyptian Society of Genetic Diseases and Nutricia Egypt. The event was held under the patronage of Prof. Ali El-Anwar, Dean of the Faculty and Chairman of the University Hospitals Board, and Prof. Tarek Youssef, Executive Director of the University Hospitals, and under the supervision of Prof. Solaf Mohamed El-Sayed, Head of the Department of Medical Genetics. The celebration aimed to shed light on the challenges faced by patients with rare diseases and explore ways to support them.

The event commenced with a keynote lecture delivered by Prof. Solaf Mohamed El-Sayed, who addressed the concept of rare genetic diseases and emphasized the importance of raising public awareness. She stressed the need to provide full support to patients and ensure their right to equitable early diagnosis and access to appropriate treatment.
The celebration also featured an intensive scientific session, during which young doctors presented distinguished clinical cases in the field of metabolism, offering detailed explanations of symptoms, diagnostic approaches, and treatment protocols.

At the conclusion of the event, the winners of the Dr. Solaf Mohamed Award for Best Scientific Presentation, granted by the Medical Genetics Society, were announced. The award was presented to Dr. Samar Sayed, Assistant Lecturer in the department, along with intern doctors Dr. Sara and Dr. Noreen, in recognition of their outstanding performance.
This event comes as part of the Faculty of Medicine’s strategy at Ain Shams University to promote scientific activities and raise both medical and community awareness of rare diseases, contributing to improving the quality of healthcare services provided to citizens.
