The Faculty of Dentistry Discusses “The Phenomenon of Bullying and Its Impact on Society”

As part of a series of educational seminars organized by the Education and Student Affairs Sector at Ain Shams University to raise awareness among youth about social and behavioral issues affecting their mental health and interactions within the university community, the Faculty of Dentistry held a seminar titled “The Phenomenon of Bullying and Its Impact on Society.” The seminar was held under the auspices of Prof. Rami Maher Ghali, Vice President of the University for Education and Student Affairs, directed by Prof. Karim El-Battouty, Dean of the Faculty of Dentistry, and administratively coordinated and supervised by Mr. Ibrahim Saeed Hamza, Assistant Secretary of the University for the Education and Student Affairs Sector, as part of the activities of the Student Families and Unions Management within the General Administration for Student Welfare.

The seminar was presented by Dr. Talaat Basha Escaros Hakim, Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychology, Faculty of Arts, Ain Shams University.

         
   
         

In her opening remarks, Prof. Reham Magdy, Vice Dean of the Faculty of Dentistry, emphasized the importance of addressing Bullying within the university community. She highlighted the need to instill values of respect and acceptance among students and to raise awareness about the negative impact of such behaviors on mental health and social relationships.

During the seminar, the speaker provided a comprehensive presentation defining Bullying and its various forms—verbal, physical, cyber, and social. He also addressed the causes and motivations behind bullying among youth, as well as its psychological and social effects on victims, such as anxiety, withdrawal, loss of self-confidence, and decreased academic performance.

The seminar outlined effective strategies to reduce bullying, including awareness campaigns, moral education, and the enhancement of positive communication skills among students. It also emphasized the crucial role of families and educational institutions in building a safe environment free of harmful behaviors, in addition to highlighting early intervention methods and support for students subjected to Bullying.

In the final part of the seminar, a discussion and Q&A session was held, during which students actively participated by sharing questions and personal experiences, adding substantial value and fostering constructive dialogue.

At the conclusion of the seminar, the faculty extended sincere thanks to all involved in preparing and executing the event, as well as to the Student Welfare Administration and the Faculty Student Union for their contributions to the organization. The speaker was also honored in recognition of his efforts in raising awareness and educating students about bullying and his role in addressing the phenomenon within the university community.
