A Symposium on “The Role of Plants in Sustainable Development” at the Faculty of Girls

The Student Affairs Sector at the Faculty of Girls, Ain Shams University, in cooperation with the College’s Student Welfare Department, organized an educational scientific symposium titled “The Role of Plants in Sustainable Development” on the morning of Sunday, 16 November 2025, in the College’s Conference Hall.

   
   

The symposium was held under the patronage of Prof. Mohamed Diaa Zain El-Abedeen, President of Ain Shams University; Prof. Amira Youssef, Dean of the Faculty; and Prof. Asmaa Zaazaa, Vice Dean for Education and Student Affairs. The event was coordinated by Prof. Fayrouz Hassan, Student Activities Coordinator, Ms. Ghada Mousa, Director of Student Welfare, and Ms. Eman Howaidi, Scientific Committee Officer.

The Scientific Committee organized this important event, and the lecture was delivered by Dr. Nahla Osman, Professor in the Department of Botany.

In her lecture, Dr. Nahla Osman highlighted the vital importance of plants in various aspects of life, emphasizing their central role in providing food as the primary source of nutrition for humans and other living beings. She also explained their environmental contributions, including air purification, carbon dioxide absorption, and maintaining ecological balance.

The lecture further addressed the medical significance of plants, showcasing their use in drug development and therapeutic applications. Regarding the preservation of future generations, Dr. Osman stressed the importance of protecting plant cover and biodiversity to ensure sustainable resources, aligning directly with the goals of sustainable development.

The symposium witnessed active participation from the students, who engaged in discussions and posed questions regarding the points presented by the lecturer, reflecting the students’ interest in environmental and sustainability issues.

This symposium is part of the Faculty of Girls’ ongoing efforts at Ain Shams University to raise awareness among students about important societal and scientific issues and to enhance their role in building a more sustainable future.
