Ain Shams University hospitals successfully perform rare and complicated surgery to separate conjoined lumbar twins

Under the auspices of Prof. Dr. Mahmoud El-Metini, President of Ain Shams University, and Prof. Dr. Ashraf Omar, Dean of the Faculty of Medicine and Chairman of the University Hospitals Board of Directors, and Prof. Dr. Tarek Youssef, Director of Al-Demerdash Surgical Hospital at Ain Shams University, Ain Shams University Hospital has succeeded in performing a precise and rare surgery to separate conjoined twins, as it was performed by a medical team from many medical specialties headed by Prof. Dr. Amr Mabrouk is a professor and head of the plastic surgery department. The medical team also included Prof. Dr. Hani Al-Dhahabi, Professor and Head of the Anesthesiology Department, and his assisting staff, Prof. Dr. Ahmed Medhat, Professor and Head of the Department of Pediatric Surgery and his assisting team, Prof. Dr. Muhammad Wael Samir, a professor of neurosurgery and his medical team.

The surgery was performed for identical twins (Lyan and Lana) at the age of one and a half years, and this condition of adhesion is rare, as Prof. Dr. Amr Mabrouk, said that this case is attached to the lower back, and a separation is made for the lower part of the spine, the rectum, part of the reproductive and urinary system, and what is associated with all these parts of nerves and bones.

He pointed out that this rare case occurs once in every 200 thousand cases of symmetrical twinning, and adhesion may be in the face, chest, abdomen, back or lower back, pointing out that the case of (Lyan and Lana) is attached to the lower back region and this case may be the surgeon does not see it only once throughout his life due to its extremely rare occurrence, as it accounts for 5% of conjoined cases in identical twins in general.

He stated that the work of the orthopedic and venereal specialties follows the completion of the surgery with the help of the plastic, pediatric surgery, brain, neurology and anesthesia specialties team.

He stated that working on this case and preparing it to undergo surgical intervention took more than 4 months since the case arrived to the hospital last August, stressing that there is a plan that has been carefully drawn up to prepare for the case amid strict precautionary and preventive measures.

Prof. Dr. Tarek Youssef confirmed that this operation was performed for free without any costs incurred by the family of the two children, and he thanked all the medical teams involved in the success of this delicate and rare operation, as he praised all the doctors of the plastic surgery department, neurosurgery and pediatric surgery, as well as nursing assistants, administrators and workers who did their utmost to make this operation a success.
