Prof. Mohamed Diaa Zain El-Abedeen, President of Ain Shams University, along with the Vice Presidents of the University and the university community, extends his sincere congratulations to Prof. Nagwa Khamis, Emeritus Professor of Medical Laboratory Analysis (Microbiology) at the University, and a pioneer of infection control at Ain Shams University and in Egypt, on her election as a member of the Board of Directors of the Alliance for the Prudent Use of Antimicrobials (APUA), which is part of the International Society for Antimicrobial Chemotherapy (ISAC).
This selection comes as a culmination of her distinguished scientific and professional career, and in recognition of her pioneering efforts in infection control, rational use of antibiotics, and her prominent role in supporting the healthcare system and enhancing safety standards and combating antimicrobial resistance at both the local and international levels.
Prof. Nagwa Khamis has a rich academic and professional career full of achievements. She is an Emeritus Professor of Medical Laboratory Analysis (Microbiology) at Ain Shams University, and she also serves as Head of the Infection Control Department at Children’s Cancer Hospital 57357.
She has previously served as a Board Member and former Secretary of the International Federation of Infection Control (IFIC) for the Eastern Mediterranean Region and was selected as a Society for Healthcare Epidemiology of America (SHEA) Ambassador in 2017.
Her international experience also includes working as a visiting physician at Assistance Publique–Hôpitaux de Paris (AP-HP), in addition to her role as President of the Society of Practitioners of Infection Control in Egypt (SPIC-Egypt), and her membership in the Health Council for Infection Control specialty, reflecting her distinguished scientific and professional status and leadership in this field.
Dr. Nagwa Khamis is considered one of the pioneers of infection control in Egypt. She contributed to establishing the first integrated infection control unit in Egypt in 1989 at Ain Shams University Specialized Hospital. She has also contributed to numerous scientific journals and specialized references locally and internationally, strengthening the position of Ain Shams University as a leading academic institution in supporting health and research issues with societal impact.
