Ain Shams University continues to solidify its distinguished position on the global higher education map, achieving a new milestone by joining the top 21% of universities worldwide, according to the 2025 Green Metric Ranking, which assesses universities' progress in achieving green growth principles and the Sustainable Development Goals.
This advancement comes under the direct patronage and support of Prof. Mohamed Diaa Zain El Abedeen, President of Ain Shams University, and within the framework of the university's ambitious strategic vision to promote environmental sustainability and good governance, and with the follow-up of Prof. Ghada Farouk, Vice President for Community Service and Environmental Development.
The university achieved a significant leap this year, advancing from the top 24% of universities worldwide in the 2024 Ranking to the top 21% in 2025, while maintaining its fifth place Ranking nationally and securing 365th place globally. This achievement comes amidst an increase in the number of universities included in the ranking to 1,745 worldwide, reflecting the strength and importance of this accomplishment.
Prof. Mohamed Diaa Zain El Abedeen affirmed that this progress is a source of pride for Ain Shams University and embodies the fruits of a clear and consistent institutional strategy. This strategy is based on the integration of efforts among the university's various departments and units, working as a unified team within the framework of the Ministry of Higher Education and scientific researchs strategy, which has enabled the university to achieve genuine competitiveness with leading international universities.
The university president added that sustainability Rankins have become a pivotal tool for guiding education and scientific research toward addressing global challenges, enhancing transparency, and measuring societal and environmental impact. He noted that universities are a key driver in achieving the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and building a more sustainable future for generations to come.
For her part, Prof. Ghada Farouk praised the tangible progress the university has made in several indicators, most notably:
Advancing 200 places in water conservation
Advancing 150 places in solid waste management
Advancing 75 places in sustainable infrastructure
She pointed out that this achievement is particularly significant given the challenges faced by established universities, such as Ain Shams University, in developing their infrastructure compared to newly established universities.
Dr. Ahmed El-Banna, Director of the International Rankings Department at the university, explained that this progress is a continuation of the university's successful track record in various prestigious international Rankins, especially those concerned with sustainability and development issues.
Dr. Ahmed El-Awady, Director of the University's Sustainability Center, emphasized that the Green Metric Rankin is based on six main criteria: scientific research, water consumption, energy consumption, solid waste management, use of sustainable transportation, and sustainable infrastructure. This reflects the comprehensive efforts undertaken by the university in this field.
