“Caritas Egypt” was the guest on the third day of the “Tamkeen” initiative’s events to raise awareness about the rights of persons with disabilities at Ain Shams University

As part of the ongoing activities of the presidential initiative “Tamkeen”, held under the patronage of Prof. Ayman Ashour, Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research, and within the framework of a renewed vision by Prof. Mohamed Diaa Zain El-Abedeen, President of Ain Shams University, to promote awareness of the rights of persons with disabilities, the University’s Education and Student Affairs Sector, represented by the Center for Students with Disabilities and supported by City Center – Caritas Egypt, organized a comprehensive awareness lecture for students, faculty staff, and teaching assistants.

The session combined recreational activities with specialized academic discussions, aiming to shed light on learning difficulties, intellectual disabilities, and ways to achieve effective inclusion. The event was attended by Prof. Rana El Helaly, Director of the Center for Students with Disabilities at the University.

Held at the Faculty of Computer and Information Sciences, the lecture was delivered by Dr. Eglal Shenouda, Executive Director of City Center – Caritas Egypt, who addressed the social and educational dimensions of these disabilities. Dr. Shenouda highlighted key points, including the prevalence of learning difficulties and intellectual disabilities in Egypt, emphasizing that individuals with such conditions possess diverse abilities that should be nurtured and developed.

The lecture focused on three main questions: How can we make life easier for people with disabilities in society? How can we support them in education through appropriate teaching methods? And how can we treat them with respect and understanding while enhancing their psychological wellbeing?

The event also featured interactive and practical activities designed to enhance participants’ engagement and skills. Highlights included a rhythmic dance performance by student Massa, a Zumba session, and a segment on etiquette for interacting with people with intellectual disabilities.

Participants also took part in art-based activities, using drawing and word association to connect language with visual expression, culminating in the creation of a collaborative mural symbolizing teamwork and shared creativity.

The initiative’s activities are organized under the administrative and executive supervision of Mr. Ibrahim Said, Assistant Secretary-General for the Education and Student Affairs Sector.
