Under the patronage of Prof. Mohamed Diaa Zain El-Abedeen, President of Ain Shams University, Prof. Ghada Farouk, Vice President for Community Service and Environmental Development, and Prof. Amany Osama Kamel, Vice President for Graduate Studies and Research, Dr. Islam Ezzat, Assistant Lecturer in the Department of Museums and Archaeological Sites Management, Faculty of Archaeology, Ain Shams University, received the Best PhD Thesis in French Award at the level of Francophone universities and departments in the Arab Republic of Egypt.
The competition also witnessed another distinction for Ain Shams University, with student Salma Moussa winning second place for her thesis "Culturalism in the Works of Muhammad Moussa: Translation and Analytical Study," an exceptional performance that earned her recognition.
This came within the framework of the international competition "My Thesis in 180 Seconds" (Ma thèse en 180 secondes), organized by the Agence Universitaire de la Francophonie in cooperation with the French Embassy in Cairo. The competition aims to encourage researchers to simplify science and promote effective scientific communication. It witnessed strong competition among eight outstanding doctoral students.
Prof. Amany Osama Kamel, Vice President for Graduate Studies and Research, expressed her pride in this achievement, which reflects Egypt's scientific competencies and its ability to compete internationally. She also praised the competition's role in enhancing the scientific communication skills of graduate students through methods of presenting and presenting research in a clear and easy-to-understand language.
Her Excellency emphasized that Ain Shams University places great importance on supporting scientific research and researchers and is working to provide all the necessary capabilities to enable them to achieve further successes that raise Egypt's profile in international scientific forums.
Dr. Islam Ezzat presented his thesis on "Microbial Biodiversity of Ancient Egyptian Wood Complexes towards Green Prevention Methods." With this achievement, Prof. Islam Ezzat will represent the Arab Republic of Egypt in the international phase of the competition, scheduled to be held in Romania in October 2025, to compete on a global level.
This year's jury included: Ms. Lina Blanc, Consul General of France in the Arab Republic of Egypt; Prof. Karim Saeed, Director of University and Scientific Affairs at the French Embassy in Cairo; Prof. Mona Amer, Regional Director of the Agence Universitaire de la Francophonie in Egypt; and Prof. Shahinda Abdel Karim, Professor of Communication and Media at the Arab Academy for Science, Technology and Maritime Transport and Head of the Department of Languages and Translation at the Egyptian-Japanese University.
This is the second time Ain Shams University has achieved a top ranking since the competition was launched in 2015. The Faculty of Al-Alsun previously won in 2023. The competition requires the presentation of a doctoral thesis in French in just three minutes, including an explanation of the topic, objectives, results, and applications, presented in simplified language and an attractive presentation style that is understandable to both specialists and non-specialists.
