Higher Education: listing of 26 Egyptian universities in the British Times Ranking 2023

Dr. Ayman Ashour, Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research, reviewed reports on the ranking of Egyptian universities in the British Times Higher Education classification of international higher education institutions for the year 2023.

The report indicated the inclusion of 26 Egyptian universities in the classification, out of 1,799 universities included in the classification from 104 countries in the world, where Aswan University topped the list of Egyptian universities, and ranked from (401-500), followed by the universities of Damietta and Kafr El-Sheikh in the rank of (501-600).

The report pointed out that 4 Egyptian universities ranked from (601-800), namely (Benha, Fayoum, Mansoura, and Minya), and 9 Egyptian universities ranked from (801-1000), namely (Al-Azhar, Alexandria, and the American University). In Egypt, Beni Suef, Cairo, Suez Canal, Tanta, Zagazig, and Zewail City for Science and Technology).

The report showed that 6 Egyptian universities ranked from (1001 - 1200), namely (Ain Shams, Assiut, Menoufia, Port Said, Sohag, and South Wadi), and 4 Egyptian universities ranked (1201 - 1500), namely (The Arab Academy for Science, Technology and Maritime Transport, the British University in Egypt, the German University in Cairo, and Helwan University).

Dr. Adel Abdel Ghaffar, media advisor and official spokesperson for the ministry, said that this classification is based on 5 key performance indicators: teaching (learning environment); research (volume, income, reputation); citations (research effect); International outlook (staff, students and research); and industry income (knowledge transfer).

It is based on 13 sub-indicators selected to provide the most comprehensive and balanced comparison. The classification requires that the university be a research educational institution, and that it has published 1,000 research papers in internationally indexed journals during the period 2017-2021, with a minimum of 150 papers per year.
