Dr. Mohamed Maait, Executive Director of the International Monetary Fund and former Minister of Finance, hosted by the Faculty of Business to discuss the new global economic system: from dominance to multipolarity

In a serious academic engagement with the ongoing global transformations and through a forward-looking analysis of future trends, the Faculty of Business at Ain Shams University organized an extensive scientific symposium titled “The New Global Economic System: From Western Dominance to Multipolarity.”

The event was held last Thursday, May 21, 2026, at Prof. Ali Lotfy Hall, serving as a high-level platform for dialogue that brought together academic theory and policymaking.

The symposium was held under the patronage of Prof. Mohamed Diaa Zain El Abedeen, President of Ain Shams University; Prof. Amany Osama Kamel, Vice President for Graduate Studies and Research; and Prof. Farid Moharam El Garhy, Dean of the Faculty of Business. The event was supervised by Prof. Tamer Radi, Vice Dean for Graduate Studies and Research, and coordinated by Prof. Eid Rashad, Assistant Professor in the Department of Economics at the faculty.

The symposium gained exceptional momentum with the attendance of H.E. Prof. Mohamed Maait, Executive Director of the International Monetary Fund and former Minister of Finance, who served as the keynote speaker and enriched the discussions with practical insights drawn from his extensive experience within international financial institutions.

The panel also featured a distinguished group of speakers and academics, including Prof. Tamer Rady, Professor of Economics and Vice Dean for Graduate Studies and Research; Prof. Yomna El Hammaki, Professor of International Economics; Prof. Eman Hashem, Professor and Head of the Department of Economics; and Prof. Eid Rashad, Assistant Professor in the department. Together, they presented an in-depth analysis of the complex international economic landscape.

The symposium addressed the fundamental transformations taking place within the global economic system amid the rapid shift in international power balances. Discussions extended to the economic, political, and geopolitical implications of these transformations, including escalating international tensions and signs of declining economic globalization.

The event also dedicated significant attention to analyzing the phenomenon of trade wars and the geo-economic fragmentation currently shaping the world economy. Discussions reached their peak when addressing the governance of international economic institutions, particularly the International Monetary Fund, amid the urgent need to adopt new mechanisms that align with the emerging map of rising economic powers. The symposium additionally featured extensive discussions on the recommendations presented in the book “The New Global Economic System” authored by Dr. Eid Rashad, Assistant Professor of Economics at the faculty.

The symposium witnessed remarkable interest and strong attendance from faculty leadership, including Prof. Dr. Mohamed Morsi, Vice Dean for Community Service and Environmental Development; Prof. Gehan Ragab, Advisor to the Dean for Sector Affairs; Prof. Amr El Atraby, Professor of Applied Statistics and former Dean of the Faculty; and Prof. Ahmed Selim, Professor of Accounting and Economic Advisor to the Deputy Prime Minister.

The hall also saw notable engagement from faculty staff, researchers, postgraduate students, journalists, and individuals interested in economic affairs, whose interventions enriched the discussions. The event once again affirmed the Faculty of Business at Ain Shams University as a leading intellectual platform capable of interpreting reality and analyzing the trajectory of the global economy through rigorous scientific approaches.
