Under the Theme “Hearing and Communication” … Ain Shams University Faculty of Medicine Celebrates World Hearing Day

In a celebratory atmosphere and in the presence of a distinguished group of academic and medical leaders, the Audiology and Balance Unit at the Faculty of Medicine, Ain Shams University, organized a major celebration marking World Hearing Day, observed annually on March 3, at the theater of Ain Shams University Specialized Hospital.

         
   
         

The event was attended by Prof. Tarek Youssef, Executive Director of Ain Shams University Hospitals; Prof. Hala Suweed, Vice Dean of the Faculty of Medicine for Community Service and Environmental Development; Prof. Hesham Anwar, Director of Ain Shams University Specialized Hospital; and Prof. Hesham Taha, Head of the Audiology and Balance Unit, in addition to Prof. Nadia Kamal, the event coordinator, and Prof. Dalia Hassan, the event organizer.

The celebration began with opening remarks delivered by several speakers, including Dr. Naeema Abed, Representative of the World Health Organization (WHO) in Egypt, hospital directors, and event organizers, all of whom emphasized the importance of early awareness and prevention of hearing problems.

The event included a presentation by Dr. Dalia Hassan highlighting the results of a hearing screening campaign conducted for students at “Deliverand Sisters School” in Heliopolis, followed by a series of specialized scientific lectures. Prof. Amani Shalaby delivered a lecture titled “Hearing and Communication in Schools,” while Prof. Wafaa El-Khouly presented a lecture on “The Importance of Early Rehabilitation for Achieving Better Academic Performance.”

         
   
         

In addition, Dr. Fatma Ragab, Director of the Disabilities Department at the Alexandria Health Directorate, discussed the importance of integration and coordination among therapeutic teams supporting individuals with hearing impairments. Ms. Hala Abdel Salam, Head of the Central Administration for General Education, also addressed the school inclusion system for students with hearing disabilities.

The event further featured inspiring segments presented by “Changemakers,” successful individuals with hearing impairments who shared their educational and professional journeys, highlighting the challenges they faced and how they overcame them.

At the conclusion of the celebration, participants recommended the importance of early screening and rehabilitation for hearing impairment in children, given its significant impact on academic achievement. They also stressed the need to raise awareness among education professionals on effective methods for supporting hearing-impaired students integrated into mainstream schools.
