Prof. Mohamed Diaa Zain El-Abedeen, President of Ain Shams University, congratulated Prof. Mohamed Al-Alfy on his official election as President of the Royal College of Ophthalmologists, marking a new scientific and professional milestone added to the global record of distinguished Egyptian medical expertise.
Prof. Al-Alfy holds both a master’s and a doctoral degree in Ophthalmology from Ain Shams University. He previously served as a Clinical Assistant Professor at the University of Nottingham in the United Kingdom, and as an Associate Professor at Egypt’s Research Institute of Ophthalmology.
The Royal College of Ophthalmologists in the UK announced Prof. Al-Alfy’s election as its President, with his official term set to commence during the College’s Annual Meeting in May 2026, succeeding Prof. Ben Burton.
The President of Ain Shams University expressed pride in this international achievement, noting that it reflects the excellence of the University’s graduates and their ability to compete and lead within the world’s most prestigious scientific and medical institutions, while underscoring the esteemed standing of Egyptian expertise on the global stage.
Prof. Al-Alfy currently serves as a Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon at Queen Victoria Hospital and Maidstone and Tunbridge Wells NHS Trust in the United Kingdom. He has brought more than 17 years of professional experience, during which he has performed thousands of successful surgical procedures that have helped restore and preserve patients’ vision. His clinical expertise includes cataract surgery, advanced intraocular lenses, refractive laser surgery, ocular surface disease, corneal diseases and transplantation, and dry eye management.
Throughout his career, Prof. Al-Alfy has held several leadership roles within the Royal College of Ophthalmologists, including College Council Member, Secretary of the Board of Trustees, Regional Representative, Lead Examiner, and Co-Lead for the Portfolio Pathway.
He currently serves as Fellowship Program Director in the Corneal Surgery Unit at Queen Victoria Hospital, where he contributes to the annual training of fellows, in addition to supervising master’s and doctoral theses in ophthalmology.
Prof. Al-Alfy holds several prestigious international fellowships, including Fellowship of the Royal College of Ophthalmologists (London), Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh, and Fellowship of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow. He is also a member of both the European and International Councils of Ophthalmology.
His distinguished research portfolio includes more than 50 peer-reviewed scientific papers published in international medical journals, and he regularly participates in global conferences as a speaker and presenter of live surgical sessions.
