Ain Shams University’s Education and Student Affairs Sector, represented by the General Administration of Youth Welfare, in cooperation with the Scientific and Technological Committee of the University Students’ Union and the Students’ Union of the Faculty of Mass Communication, organized an awareness seminar at the Faculty of Mass Communication titled “The Risks of Social Media.” The event was held under the patronage of Prof. Mohamed Diaa Zain El-Abedeen, President of the University; Prof. Rami Maher Ghali, Vice President for Education and Student Affairs; and Prof. Heba Shaheen, Dean of the Faculty of Mass Communication.
The seminar was part of a cooperation protocol with the Ministry of Social Solidarity and was administratively supervised by Mr. Ibrahim Saeed Hamza, Assistant Secretary of the University for the Education and Student Affairs Sector.
The seminar featured a lecture by Dr. Sahar Gharib, Assistant Professor in the Department of News Journalism at the Faculty. She began by highlighting the main risks of social media and its impact on individuals’ privacy, followed by a review of recent global studies examining the relationship between social media and fake news. She further explained the dangers of social media, emphasizing violations of individuals’ rights to protect their personal data and the risk of cyberattacks.
Dr. Gharib also discussed the concept of digital privacy in modern legislation, stressing that the Egyptian Constitution safeguards personal data in digital environments as a fundamental human right. She addressed how the public can recognize privacy violations, such as spam messages, intrusion, or identity theft, and explained preventive measures, including avoiding unknown links, using strong passwords and changing them periodically, and being aware of the terms of service for websites and applications.
