The Department of Italian Language at the Faculty of Al-Alsun, Ain Shams University, held its First International Conference titled “Italian Studies and the Challenges of the Third Millennium”, over the course of two days.
The conference was held under the patronage of Prof. Mohamed Diaa Zain El Abedin, President of Ain Shams University, Prof. Amany Osama Kamel, Vice President for Postgraduate Studies and Research, Prof. Salwa Rashad, Dean of the Faculty of Al-Alsun, Prof. Ashraf Atteya, Vice Dean for Postgraduate Studies and Research, and was supervised by Prof. Dalia Gamal Abou El-Enain, Head of the Italian Language Department and Conference Chair. The event witnessed the attendance of a distinguished group of faculty members, teaching assistants, and students.
In her speech, Prof. Salwa Rashad, Dean of the Faculty, emphasized the faculty’s continued commitment to academic and cultural openness, and to fostering scientific cooperation between Egyptian and international universities. She highlighted the Italian Department as a model of excellence that plays a key role in strengthening civilizational and cultural ties between Egypt and Italy by preparing academic and research-oriented graduates who can keep pace with rapid developments in the fields of language, translation, and literary studies.
She also praised the great efforts of the organizing committee and the participating researchers, reaffirming the faculty's full support for all academic initiatives that contribute to advancing scientific research and improving the quality of university education.
Prof. Dalia Gamal Abou El-Enain, Head of the Italian Department and Chair of the Conference, explained that this academic event marks a significant step toward aligning with contemporary transformations in Italian Studies. The conference aims to build bridges of scholarly exchange among researchers from different universities and promote the sharing of expertise and insights on modern trends in literature, linguistics, and translation.
She also expressed her pride at the department’s inaugural international conference, attributing its success to the combined efforts of faculty members and students. She noted that the event reflects the faculty’s strategic vision for supporting scientific research and engaging with diverse cultures.
The conference sought to address recent developments in fields related to Italian Studies, including Literature, Linguistics, Translation, Cross-cultural and cross-linguistic comparisons, Language teaching, and Modern technologies in language and literary studies
It also tackled key challenges facing researchers in these areas by presenting innovative approaches and fresh perspectives to keep up with the transformations brought about by the third millennium in the study of the Italian language and its literature.
A distinguished group of scholars and academics participated in the conference, representing countries such as Italy, Poland, and the United States, in addition to Egyptian students of Italian language from other universities, including Faculty of Al-Alsun at Minia University, Faculty of Al-Alsun at Kafr El-Sheikh University, and the Faculty of Arts, Cairo University.
The conference received forty research papers covering topics in language, literature, and translation. The scientific committee included professors from Ain Shams University’s Italian Department, as well as scholars from the University of Perugia, University for Foreigners of Siena, and University of Bologna in Italy.
The conference honored Prof. Miriam Voghera, President of the Italian Linguistics Association, which organizes the largest international conference on Italian linguistics.
