The Faculty of Law is a strategic partner with the United Nations Commission on International Trade Law in the CLOUT arbitral awards database project

Prof. Mohamed Safi, Dean of the Faculty of Law at Ain Shams University, received a letter from Professor Anna Joban Brett, Secretary-General of the United Nations Commission on International Trade Law (UNCITRAL), considering the Faculty of Law at Ain Shams University a strategic partner of UNCITRAL regarding the CLOUT project related to the database of national and international arbitral awards.

UNCITRAL launched this project several years ago with the aim of collecting, classifying, and summarizing key arbitration rulings from national and international courts, in order to make all such rulings freely available to all.

Ain Shams University is the only partner of UNCITRAL in this project from the Africa and Middle East region.

This strategic partnership comes against the backdrop of the beginning of fruitful cooperation with UNCITRAL since last year when the Faculty of Law at Ain Shams University joined the UNCITRAL Days in Africa initiative.

The first activities of this initiative, directed to all African universities, were launched at Ain Shams University in the conference organized in October 2022 on dispute resolution between the state and the foreign investor. This was followed by UNCITRAL's participation as a partner in the Faculty of Law's November 2022 conference on sustainable development and climate change.

Thus, under this initiative, the Faculty of Law at Ain Shams University organized two conferences with UNCITRAL in the personal presence of the UNCITRAL representative.

The cooperation between UNCITRAL and the Faculty of Law at Ain Shams University will continue in the year 2023, as the Faculty will organize a one-day conference in partnership with UNCITRAL on bankruptcy provisions in the first week of October 2023, and UNCITRAL will also participate in organizing the Faculty of Law conference on artificial intelligence on the fourth and fifth of November 2023.

Cooperation with UNCITRAL is one of the faculty’s priorities, with the aim of linking it with prestigious international legal bodies and providing faculty students with the opportunity to experience the practical reality. Work on the CLOUT project will be the first project for the legal clinic at the Faculty of Law under the management of Dr. Sherif Al-Attafi.

This strategic partnership between the faculty and UNCITRAL is the culmination of the continuous efforts of Dr. Ahmed Khalifa, Director of the International Cooperation Office, which resulted in linking the faculty with a group of prestigious international scientific partnerships.
