The Department of Plastic Surgery at Ain Shams University is considered the first and pioneering department in plastic surgery at the level of Egypt and the Middle East. It was also the first and only specialized department for many years since its inception in 1958. A number of world-class heads who contributed to the department’s access to that prestigious position succeeded in heading the department. By introducing the latest techniques and surgical methods in a timely manner. Among these techniques, which were introduced in Egypt for the first time, are cranial surgeries and microscopic surgeries by Prof. Hassan Badran, may God have mercy on him, then maxillofacial surgeries and the use of microchips and screws to stabilize fractures, which were introduced by Prof. Mustafa Hamida in 1984, the first president of the AOCMF. This culminated in the accreditation of the Doctor of Plastic Surgery degree in 1992 as the first scientific degree specialized in plastic surgery in all its specializations at the level of Egypt, the Arab countries and even Europe.

The department is considered the first destination for patients with oral and maxillofacial surgeries, congenital deformities of the face and skull, fractures and tumors of the jaws at the level of Cairo and the neighboring governorates, as the department receives more than 30 cases per week, with an average of more than 3 cases per day of patients with facial and jaw fractures. In addition to cases of tumors and congenital anomalies, more than one daily operation is performed.

Prof. Amr Magdy, head of the department, praised the establishment of the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Unit, which was opened as the first specialized unit in the Egyptian universities, as a culmination of the history of the department, and to contribute to the training of young doctors and the devotion of research in this delicate specialization, and to receive trainees from abroad.

The door to apply has been opened since the beginning of August for trainees who have obtained fellowship grants from the International Society of Oral, Maxillofacial and Craniofacial Surgery for training in the department as one of the 28 accredited centers worldwide in Asia, Europe, North and Latin America.

The trainees will get a unique educational experience with enhanced communication and experience exchange opportunities with a group of surgeons specializing in the field during the training period, which ranges from 4 to 8 weeks.
