The team of the Faculty of Engineering, Ain Shams University, wins the international competition to design an earthquake-resistant building in America

Under the auspices of Prof. Dr. Mahmoud El-Metini, President of Ain Shams University, Prof. Dr. Abdel Fattah Saoud, Vice President of Education and Student Affairs, Prof. Dr. Omar Al-Husseini, Dean of the Faculty of Engineering, and Prof. Dr. Mostafa Refaat, Vice Dean of the Faculty of Engineering for Education and Student Affairs, the team of the Faculty of Engineering, Ain Shams University, won the global earthquake design competition held annually in the United States of America, and the students achieved an unprecedented achievement this year, as the building designed by the students passed the earthquake resistance test and did not collapse, under the supervision of Dr. Mohamed Kahil - Assistant Professor, Department of Structural Engineering.

It is worth noting that the Global Seismic Design Competition (SDC) of the International Seismic Organization EERI is held annually in one of the cities of the US states that are located in the earthquake belt, to design buildings that are able to withstand this natural disaster, and to enhance their ability to be sustainable and resilient.

The competition aims to teach students to design a practical project and build a multi-storey structure that is resistant to earthquakes, it also aims to encourage the study of earthquake engineering among university students, and provide an opportunity for Bachelor students in cost-effective design and seismic load resistance and encourage international participation in such activities.

This year, 40 universities from different countries of the world participated in the competition, and Ain Shams University students were able to win the seventh place in terms of architectural design, the seventh place in predicting the behavior of the building under the influence of earthquakes, and the tenth place in the competition. This is the first time in the Arab world that the team of the Faculty of Engineering, Ain Shams University achieves this place.

The team of the Faculty of engineering of Ain Shams University, which consisted of 26 students studying in the third and fourth year of the faculty and from the civil engineering and architecture departments, participated after skipping two stages, the first is to design a building that has the ability to resist earthquakes and present it to members of the competition committee from university professors before traveling to the United States and the second after Acceptance and approval of the offer the design is implemented using a specific type of wood and tested by placing it on a device, exposing it to vibration and measuring its ability to withstand.

The team of students that implemented the design of the earthquake-resistant building and achieved this victory: Abdel Azim Sharif, Saher Samir, Farida Mohsen, Omar Ashraf, Mohamed Emad, Alaa Ibrahim, Mohamed Jalal, Mai Ahmed, Mustafa Ashraf, Mawaddah Yasser, Yassin Hamdi, Alaa Jamal , Moamen Omar, Mustafa Mohamed, Mohamed Tariq, Mahmoud Tariq, Salah al-Din Amr, Nourhan Reda, Abdullah Hisham, Abd al-Rahman Hamada, Omar Sami, Youssef Ihab, Abd al-Rahman Mohamed, Mustafa Hilal, Mustafa al-Shafi’i, Heidi Mohamed, and Hania Tounsi.

The competition officials set its different conditions every year as geographical conditions in the city for which the building is designed until a certain number of floors are reached after which the area to be built varies, so this matter is not easy. To reduce expenses and the ability of the building or design to overcome the vibrations in the tests set by the judges…among the requirements for this year’s competition is the building’s resistance to two earthquakes, the first due to the fact that Salt Lake City, Utah “in which the competition was held this year” was located in an earthquake zone, and the second earthquake resistance stronger than the first earthquake and be destructive.
