Ain Shams University has achieved a new milestone in sustainability and its transition toward a green university, ranking 7th among Egyptian universities, 10th in Africa, and 468th globally out of 2,016 participating universities worldwide, according to the 2026 UI GreenMetric World University Rankings.

This achievement was accomplished under the patronage of Prof. Mohamed Diaa Zain El-Abedeen, President of Ain Shams University; Prof. Amany Osama, Vice President for Postgraduate Studies and Research; and Prof. Rami Maher, Vice President for Education and Student Affairs, and under the supervision of Dr. Ahmed El-Banna, Director of the University’s International Ranking Office, and Dr. Ahmed El-Awady, Director of the University’s Center of Excellence for Sustainability.

Ain Shams University scored 7,142 points across the ranking’s various indicators, which assessed university performance in key areas including scientific research, infrastructure, sustainable transportation, energy use, water management, and waste management. This reflects the University’s commitment to integrating sustainability principles into its educational, research, and administrative systems.

Ain Shams University’s continued presence among the world’s top 25% green universities, despite an increase of around 300 participating universities in the 2026 edition compared with the 2025 ranking, demonstrates the University’s success in continuously improving its sustainability performance and strengthening its competitiveness in international rankings.

This progress comes as part of Ain Shams University’s strategy to embed institutional sustainability, develop a more efficient and sustainable university environment, and support scientific research addressing sustainable development issues. The strategy also promotes the responsible use of resources and the adoption of environmentally friendly practices, in alignment with the Sustainable Development Goals and the University’s vision to strengthen its academic and research standing at both the regional and international levels.

The UI GreenMetric ranking reflects the University’s ongoing efforts to translate sustainability principles into tangible practices across its campus through infrastructure development, improved energy and water efficiency, enhanced sustainable waste management, the promotion of sustainable transportation, and support for scientific research and innovation in the fields of environment and sustainability.
