The Director of the Medical Research Center (MASRI) at Ain Shams University Attends Inauguration of Specialized Liver Cancer Research Center Affiliated with the National Research Centre to Advance Applied Research and Early Diagnosis

In line with the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research’s vision to strengthen the role of scientific research in serving society and support applied research aimed at addressing health challenges, Dr. Mamdouh Moawad, President of the National Research Centre and Acting President of the Academy of Scientific Research and Technology, inaugurated the Liver Cancer Research Center at the Medical Research Center of Excellence, affiliated with the National Research Centre. The inauguration took place on the sidelines of the scientific salon titled “Liver Cancer in Egypt: Current Status and Scientific Research Challenges.”

The launch of the center marks a significant addition to efforts to advance applied research in the field of liver cancer, develop prevention and early-detection mechanisms, and harness the latest genetic, molecular, and clinical research technologies. These efforts support the state’s ongoing initiatives to enhance the healthcare system.

The scientific salon featured prominent participation by Prof. Hesham El-Gazaly, Director of the Medical Research Center at Ain Shams University (MASRI) and Egypt’s representative to the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), an agency of the World Health Organization. He welcomed the launch of the new center and emphasized the importance of expanding avenues for cooperation and scientific integration among Egypt’s various research institutions and organizations and the International Agency for Research on Cancer, with the aim of coordinating efforts to address this major health challenge.

The salon also featured extensive discussions attended by a distinguished group of leading physicians and researchers. Discussions focused on the key challenges associated with liver cancer in Egypt, as well as ways to raise public awareness of the importance of regular screening and further develop early detection and diagnosis systems.

The discussions concluded with a number of recommendations, most notably updating early screening and diagnosis protocols; enhancing the efficiency of radiological examinations and utilizing advanced technologies, including liquid biopsy; supporting research on fatty liver disease; advancing personalized medicine and genetic research; strengthening partnerships and cooperation among universities, various research institutions and organizations, the Ministry of Health, and university hospitals; and establishing a national network to support research and facilitate data sharing. These efforts are expected to help coordinate research activities and establish a research roadmap for the next five years.

The launch of the Liver Cancer Research Center represents an important step toward leveraging scientific research and modern technologies to address health challenges and strengthen integration between scientific research and medical applications, ultimately contributing to improved healthcare quality and better service to the community.
