Faculty of Girls Discusses "Healthy Nutrition and Osteoporosis in Women"

In the framework of the cultural season of faculty of Girls under the auspices of Prof. Dr. Rukia Shalaby, Dean of the Faculty, the Department of Community Services and Environmental Development organized a symposium entitled "Healthy Eating Habits". Where Prof. Dr. Mai Helmi opened the seminar, emphasizing the overall management of interest in the work of various awareness seminars in order to educate the students in various fields.

Prof. Dr. Fatima Hassan, professor of nutrition at the Department of Biochemistry and Nutrition at the Faculty, presented an explanation of some of the wrong food habits in cooking food such as adding salt or sodium bicarbonate and how to preserve the nutritional value by reducing the flipping and closing of the pot, how to wash and peeling vegetables in a way that maintains vitamins.

She added that it is bad habits in Egypt to drink tea after eating, which reduces the absorption of iron and vitamins from food, as well as not to expose food to fire for a long time, especially vegetables, and stressed the importance of eating leafy vegetables, fruits and whole grains not peeled.

Followed by another seminar presented by Prof. Dr. Kut Al-Kloop Bakir, a professor of nutrition at the Department of Biochemistry and Nutrition under the title "Osteoporosis in Women", which is called the silent thief. She explained Heart disease is the most common health problem in women according to WHO. Lack of dietary intake of calcium, phosphorus and protein, as well as lack of exposure to the sun daily enough to become a vitamin D under the skin.

She added, "Women's bones are lighter and brittle than men, especially after the age of 40, when female hormones are less secreted and lead to osteoporosis," she said. "To avoid this, you should periodically check foods rich in calcium, phosphorus, vitamin D, exposure to the sun and reduce the intake of caffeine- Coffee and soft drinks, and advised some herbs that reduce the vulnerability such as ginger, thyme, licorice and garlic, and pointed to the importance of exercise, especially walking.

At the end of the seminar, Prof. Dr. Mai Helmi honored Prof. Dr. Fatima Hassan and Prof. Dr. Kut Al-Kloop Bakir.
