She is a prominent figure at the Faculty of Pharmacy at Ain Shams University. Prof. Rania Mohamed Hathout is a professor and head of the Department of Pharmaceutics and Industrial Pharmacy at the Faculty of Pharmacy.
She joined the Faculty of Pharmacy at Ain Shams University and graduated in 2000. She then obtained her master's degree in 2006, which focused on the treatment of glaucoma. She received a scholarship from the Ministry of Higher Education for establishing a scientific channel between Ain Shams University and the University of Bath in Britain, one of the top five universities in pharmacy in the United Kingdom. Hathout studied there for two years.

Her Scientific Efforts
Hathout is one of the Egyptian scientists who worked on the idea of nanoparticles, like Dr. Mustafa El-Sayed, who worked on gold nanoparticles.
She has worked for several pharmaceutical companies as a consultant, solving problems they face until they reach the best possible drug formulation. She is also working on developing new drug ideas for application in Egypt. She has presented 100 research papers over 25 years, and her research has been widely cited. She has also authored 15 book chapters and edited two books. Most of her research addresses the treatment of various types of cancer, including liver, brain, breast, and lung tumors.
One of her papers was selected as one of the best African research papers by the American Chemical Society in 2020 and was also named the best presentation at a breast cancer conference in London in 2019.
One of her papers ranked among the top 1% of research papers in the field of pharmacology from 2017 to 2020.
She was ranked among the top 2% of scientists in the world in 2023, based on the impact of her research for four consecutive years by Stanford University.

Awards and Honors
Dr. Rania Hathout is not merely a researcher; she is a pioneer in computational pharmaceutics and pharmaceutical information technology, with an exceptional scientific journey that has led her to receive the State Incentive Award and the State Award for Excellence. Furthermore, she is a distinguished university professor, recognized for her innovative methods in education and teaching.
The awards received by Hathout are almost annual. The most recent is the 2025 Abdul Hameed Shoman Award in the field of Medical and Health Sciences for her outstanding research on drug delivery systems for biologics using nanotechnology.
Dr. Rania Hathout also received a grant from the Egyptian Academy of Scientific Research and Technology, which funds short research visits for scholars.
On May 1, 2024, Dr. Rania Hathout won the Khalifa Educational Award in its 17th edition, in the category of Distinguished University Professor at the Arab world level. She was granted the "Ain Shams University Innovates" award in 2022. She was also selected as one of the best students and alumni of British universities and received the State Award for Excellence in Technological Sciences in 2021.
She won the Prof. Seddik Afifi Award for Scientific Research, Innovation, and Literature in 2021 in the field of Informatics and Artificial Intelligence. Dr. Rania Hathout also received the Obada International Prize, presented by the Natural Sciences Publishing House and the African Academy of Sciences. In 2020, she received numerous awards and honors reflecting her distinction and significant contributions to the fields of science and education. She won the EIPICO award for Best Graduation Project in 2018, the Mina Pharm award for Best Graduation Project in 2019, and at the 14th International Conference of the American Society for Cosmetic Science from Natural Sources, she won the award for Best Presentation, in addition to two awards from the Misr El Kheir Foundation for Best Scientific Research.
Hathout received the Medal of Excellence, First Class, for Scientific Distinction in 2017. That same year, she received the State Award for Institutions and Individuals in the field of Drugs and Pharmaceutical Preparations. In 2016, she received the State Award for Institutions and Individuals in the field of Medical Genetics. She was awarded the State Incentive Award in Technological Sciences serving medical fields in 2014.
Supervision Awards
Prof. Rania Hathout has also received awards for supervising the best graduation projects at the Faculty of Pharmacy, Ain Shams University, for four consecutive years. In addition, she has won awards for supervising the best master’s theses from Ain Shams University and the British University in Egypt, as well as for the best research derived from a thesis at Future University in Egypt.
This is in addition to awards from international institutions such as the European Science Foundation in France in 2013, a grant from Lancaster University in the UK for young scientists in 2016, and a grant from the Innophonic Foundation in the USA in 2019. She has also received certificates of appreciation from other international institutions like Wiley and Elsevier for her research efforts and contributions.
A continuous journey of dedication, excellence, and innovative ideas in teaching and research to find treatments for intractable diseases is the approach that Dr. Rania Hathout follows in her work and research.
