The Faculty of Arts, Ain Shams University, is the first faculty in the Egyptian universities to establish an independent department for oriental languages

The law establishing the university was issued in 1950 AD, and stipulated that the university should consist of several faculties, including the Faculty of Arts, and its nucleus would be the literary section of the Higher Institute for Teachers. Prof. Ibrahim Nashi Kassem, professor of Greek and Roman history, was chosen as the first dean of the faculty (1950-1954 AD).

At that time, the new university tried to develop a new and different approach to each of the two universities that preceded it, so it was decided that the Faculty of Arts at Ain Shams University would adopt different paths from the Faculty of Arts at Cairo and Alexandria Universities, by organizing the study on the basis of the “Grads system” instead of the “years system.” In the sense that the organization of study in it is based on obtaining four certificates, each in an academic year, and in total, the student obtains a bachelor’s degree at the end of the fourth year.

The faculty has already adopted this system and achieved remarkable success in it for several years, until the traditional trend returned and prevailed over the degree system.

What distinguishes the Faculty of Arts at Ain Shams University also is that it was the first faculty in Egyptian universities to establish an independent department for oriental languages to study bachelor degree and beyond in oriental Islamic and Semitic languages and literature, and it was also the only faculty in Egyptian universities at the time that established a department for psychological and social studies... and the Faculty of Arts, Ain Shams University, continued to be distinguished throughout its long history until now...
