Fields of Intellectual Property: Patents and Utility Models …A Workshop at the Innovation and Entrepreneurship Center at Ain Shams University in Collaboration with the Egyptian Intellectual Property Authority

The Innovation and Entrepreneurship Center (ASU-iHub) at Ain Shams University, in collaboration with the Egyptian Intellectual Property Authority, organized a two-day workshop focused on introducing key fields of intellectual property, particularly patents and utility models.

The workshop was held under the patronage of Prof. Mohamed Diaa Zain El Abedeen, President of Ain Shams University, Prof. Amany Osama Kamel, Vice President for Postgraduate Studies and Research, and Prof. Neveen Assem, Executive Director of the Innovation and Training Sector. The workshop was supervised and coordinated by Dr. Mohamed Magdy, Director of the Innovation and Entrepreneurship Center.

         
   
         

The event hosted distinguished experts from the Egyptian Intellectual Property Authority, including Dr. Rasha Gamal Lotfy, Head of the Pharmaceutical Examination Department at the Egyptian Patent Office, who brings extensive expertise in patent examination, Dr. Heba Abdel Rahim Mohamed, Senior Patent Examiner in the pharmaceutical field at the Authority, with over 18 years of experience at the Egyptian Patent Office (EGPO).

The workshop aimed to raise awareness about the importance of protecting ideas and innovations, provide practical knowledge on transforming scientific research into legal rights, and familiarize participants with mechanisms for registering and protecting innovations both inside and outside Egypt. It also sought to support researchers in utilizing the services provided by the Egyptian Patent Office.

Key topics covered during the workshop included An introduction to intellectual property and its various branches, Patent definitions, conditions for obtaining patents, and exceptions, The application process and components of a patent request at the Egyptian Patent Office, Overview of the services provided by the EGPO, and Essential steps inventors should take before submitting a patent application

         
   
         

The workshop saw a large turnout from researchers, faculty members, innovation unit managers, and intellectual property coordinators from various university faculties. These attendees are expected to become key advocates in spreading awareness of IP protection and safeguarding the outcomes of scientific research within the university community.

Notably, this workshop is among the first collaborative events between Ain Shams University and the newly formed Egyptian Intellectual Property Authority, reflecting a mutual commitment to embedding a culture of intellectual property protection within the academic and research ecosystem.
