A seminar at the Faculty of Engineering on the Various Applications of Geosynthetic Materials in Soil Reinforcement

Under the patronage of Prof. Mohamed Diaa Zain El-Abedeen, President of Ain Shams University, the Faculty of Engineering, in collaboration with the International Geosynthetics Society – Egypt Chapter and Solmax Company, organized a seminar on the various applications of geosynthetic materials in soil reinforcement. The event was held under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Amr Shaat, Dean of the Faculty of Engineering.

The seminar hosted Professor Laurent Briançon, researcher at the National Institute of Applied Sciences at the University of Lyon, France, and Dr. Abdelkader Abdelwahab, Head of the Geotechnical Engineering Expert Team for Europe, the Middle East, and Africa at Solmax. It was attended by a group of professors from Egyptian universities, engineers from various companies interested in civil engineering, and both undergraduate and postgraduate students.

The seminar addressed modern methods for employing geosynthetic materials in soil reinforcement and how these methods have become central to many research projects aimed at developing design and implementation standards. The speakers explained how laboratory experiments are conducted to understand the interaction mechanisms between soil and geosynthetic reinforcement sheets, as well as the use of numerical models to calibrate design equations and establish accurate design foundations.

It was also highlighted that large-scale field experiments are essential to understanding the real-world performance of these materials, especially given their diversity and the complexity of their interaction with various soil types. This necessitates joint research and development efforts among academics, engineers, and manufacturers.

The seminar also discussed how these technologies can be applied to infrastructure projects in Egypt and the region.
