The AO Foundation is globally recognized for its specialization in educating and training physicians in various branches of craniofacial and maxillofacial surgery. These include the reduction and fixation of skull and facial fractures, correction of craniofacial deformities, aesthetic jaw surgery, tumor resection in the head and neck, and subsequent reconstruction surgeries.
Prof. Mohamed Diaa Zain El-Abedeen, President of Ain Shams University, expressed his pride in this achievement, describing it as a significant milestone for the Faculty of Medicine that contributes to its reputation in education and training while elevating the university’s global standing.
Prof. Ali El Anwar, Dean of the Faculty of Medicine and Chairman of the University Hospitals Board, congratulated the Department of Plastic Surgery, particularly Prof. Ahmed Ali Hassan, Head of the Department, and Prof. Amir El Barbary, Professor in the department and Chairman of the Global AO Foundation for Craniofacial and Maxillofacial Surgery.
Prof. Tarek Youssef, Executive Director of Ain Shams University Hospitals, expressed his pride in the remarkable work of the Maxillofacial Surgery Unit and its role in providing high-quality training courses for doctors from Egypt and the wider Arab region. He emphasized that this success is a direct result of the hospitals' commitment to continuous medical education and surgical training.
Prof. Essam Fakhry, Director of El Demerdash Hospital and Deputy Executive Director of the University Hospitals, affirmed that the administration provides all necessary resources to support the departments in their mission to train and educate physicians, particularly in the specialized field of facial and jaw surgery.
It is worth noting that Prof. Amir El Barbary, a leading figure in the department and a renowned expert in craniofacial and maxillofacial surgery, was recently elected as Chairman of the AO Foundation's Board of Directors globally. He regularly lectures in this specialty around the world.
In addition, Prof. Mostafa Hamedah, Emeritus Professor and former Head of the Department, was the first to introduce facial and jaw fracture fixation techniques in Egypt during the mid-1980s. A long-time AO Foundation member and former regional president, he played a pioneering role in training generations of faculty members and surgeons across Egypt, the Arab world, and Africa in this complex and vital field.
