Human Rights... Between Theory and Practice…The third symposium of the Middle East Research Center at the Faculty of Al-Alsun

The Faculty of Al-Alsun at Ain Shams University hosted the third Middle East Research Center seminar entitled “Human Rights... Between Theory and Practice,” under the patronage of Prof. Salwa Rashad, Dean of the Faculty of Al-Alsun, and in the presence of Prof. Youmna Safwat, Vice Dean for Community Service and Environmental Development Affairs, and it was presented by Prof. Hatem Al-Abd, Director of the Middle East Research Center.

Prof. Youmna Safwat, Vice Dean of the Faculty for Community Service and Environmental Development Affairs, opened the symposium activities, stressing that this event comes within the framework of the keenness of the university and college leaders to raise the level of political and cultural awareness among university students in light of the current conditions and current events so that students learn about what they enjoy. It has inherent rights, with an emphasis on the necessity of acquiring knowledge not being limited to the field of academic specialization, which necessitates the provision of such awareness seminars in a variety of fields.

During his speech, Prof. Hatem Al-Abd, Director of the Center, stressed that to understand human rights law, one must first become familiar with the concept of law in general, which is the set of rules that regulate relations between members of society during a specific period of time in a specific territory, and is divided into public law and private law.

His Excellency stressed that the state is responsible for providing human rights to its citizens, ensuring the application and exercise of those rights, and protecting and guaranteeing them. On the other hand, citizens must fulfill their duties towards their country and not violate the laws or infringe on the rights of others.

He pointed out that international human rights are based on four main sources, which are the Declaration of Human Rights issued by the French Revolution, the Universal Declaration of Human Rights issued by the United Nations, and finally the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights and the International Covenant on Economic and Social Rights, in addition to the Charter of Human Rights. The individual is specific to each country and is compatible with its own religion, culture, and customs.

Then, Dr. Al-Abd reviewed the definition of international humanitarian law concerned with periods of war and armed conflict to ensure the safety and security of civilians and parties not participating in the armed conflict.

After the end of the symposium, the discussion was opened to the students, where Prof. Dr. Hatem Al-Abd answered all inquiries.

At the end of the symposium, Prof. Yomna Safwat, presenting a certificate of honor to Prof. Hatem Al-Abd, in appreciation of his distinguished and fruitful efforts.
