"Scientific Translation... Mechanisms and Challenges of Reception" Symposium at the Faculty of Al-Alsun

Within the framework of the cultural salon seminars offered by the faculty to students, the Community Service and Environmental Development Sector organized a cultural symposium entitled "Scientific Translation, Mechanisms and Challenges of Reception", under the auspices of Prof. Salwa Rashad, Dean of the Faculty, and the supervision of Prof. Youmna Safwat, Vice Dean for Community Service and Environmental Development.

The symposium hosted the writer and translator, Dr. Ahmed Samir Saad, Lecturer of Anesthesiology, Kasr Al-Ainy Medicine, at Cairo University.

For her part, Prof. Youmna Safwat Salem, Vice Dean for Community Service and Environmental Development, welcomed the guest and talked about the importance of the cultural seminars that the sector offers to the students of the Faculty of Al-Alsun, in addition to the seminars that qualify them for the labor market, which come within the framework of field and vocational training.

She emphasized that scientific translation is a branch of specialized translation that students study within the translation course in their science departments. She talked about the elements of a scientific book translator and indicated the importance of the knowledge reference required by this type of translation.

 

Dr. Nahed Rahel, General Coordinator of Field Training at the Faculty, referred to the challenges faced by the translator who aims to translate scientific books, explaining that the first challenge lies in choosing the environment within which the text will be published in its target language, and the second challenge is to anticipate the future of translation by recording the impact of the text on the target audience and knowing the extent to which the expectations of the recipient for whom the text is being translated are met.

The writer and translator Ahmed Samir Saad spoke at the beginning about the history of scientific translation, which goes back to the scientist, Dr. Hanin Ibn Ishaq, and pointed out the importance of scientific translation, and the necessity of translating scientific books, whether in an individual framework or within an institutional framework, indicating that the scientific books that he is interested in translating are books Which links the sciences with the actual reality and is concerned with simplifying the sciences, whether for young people or adults and addresses some of the problems that the translator may face, the most important of which is the problem of transferring the scientific term, indicating, in the end, the need to produce a friendly translation that the reader does not feel difficult or strange.

At the end of the seminar, the students asked some questions about how to obtain the rights to translate books. Dr. Yomna Safwat presented a Certificate of Appreciation and Faculty Shield for guest Dr. Ahmed Samir Saad.
