Prof. Mahmoud El-Meteini: The success of the first lung transplant from a living donor,, A new medical breakthrough in the field of organ transplantation

Prof. Dr. Mahmoud El-Meteini, President of Ain Shams University, declared the success of the first lung transplant from a living donor inside Ain Shams Specialized Hospital, was a new medical achievement in the field of organ transplantation, and the leadership came to Egyptian doctors and Ain Shams University hospitals in introducing this new type of surgery in Egypt, the Arab world and the East Middle East, Africa and a number of countries in the world.

Prof. Dr. Mahmoud El-Meteini explained that more than 60 individuals participated in this medical achievement at a cost of 2 million pounds, which was borne by Ain Shams University in its entirety.

And Prof. Dr. Mahmoud El-Metini praised the efforts of the medical team led by Prof. Dr. Ahmed Mostafa, head of the lung transplantation team, and in fruitful cooperation with the Japanese expert, Professor Hiroshi Date.

And Prof. Dr. Ahmed Mostafa spoke about the case of the 28-year-old patient, Sahar, who was suffering from severe pulmonary fibrosis and a severe increase in pulmonary artery pressure, her complete dependence on home oxygen, and her multiple admissions to intensive care to receive oxygen and put her on a respirator Saying: Sahar came to us at the lung transplantation clinic at Ain Shams Specialized Hospital, Ain Shams University. The medical examination was carried out by the lung transplantation team, and it was decided that she should have a lung transplant from a living donor, due to the patient’s inability to live without a lung transplant. Immediately, both of her brothers (Jumma and Kamel) offered to donate a lobe of the lung to her, and after doing the necessary tests and histocompatibility, it was found that they were able to donate, and after taking the opinion of the Japanese expert, Professor Hiroshi Date, they agreed and set the date for the operation on Wednesday, the fourteenth of December 2022.

At exactly seven o'clock this morning, and in the presence of the large medical team consisting of the Department of Thoracic Surgery, the Department of Cardiac Surgery, the Department of Anesthesia, Intensive Care and Artificial Perfusion, led by Professor Hiroshi Date, the patient was prepared and entered operations to perform the first lung transplant from a living donor in Egypt. The operation took about 14 hours Where the patient was connected to the central Ecmo device (artificial perfusion), then the lower lobe of the right lung was taken from the first donor (Kamel) and transplanted in place of the right lung of the patient Sahar, and the lower lobe of the left lung was taken from the second donor (Juma) and transplanted in place of the left lung for the patient Sahar.

The patient was discharged from operations to intensive care on the central ECM device, vital signs monitoring devices, and medications to support the heart muscle. She is followed up moment by moment, and periodic checks are performed to follow up on her vital signs. With the improvement of the condition, the central ECM device was transferred to a peripheral ECM device, which is expected to last for two days to 3 days, and thank God, the patient regained consciousness, and it is expected that the patient will be in intensive care for about two weeks, under medical observation.
