"Problems of medical translation into Arabic"…an online seminar at Faculty of Al-Alsun

The Graduate Studies Sector at Faculty of Al-Alsun, Ain Shams University organized a scientific symposium entitled: “Problems of Medical Translation into Arabic”, under the auspices of Prof. Dr. Mahmoud El-Metini, President of the University, Prof. Dr. Ayman Saleh, Vice President for Postgraduate Studies and Research, Prof. Dr. Salwa Rashad, Dean of the Faculty and the supervision of Prof. Dr. Ashraf Attia, Vice Dean for Postgraduate Studies and Research, where the symposium was held on Wednesday 19 May via the MS TEAMS application,

The symposium was attended by 140 postgraduate students, faculty, and faculty staff, in addition to faculty members from the College of Arts and Medicine.

The symposium was attended by Mr. Muhammad Atallah, the translator for WHO regional office in the Middle East, and several translators working for the World Health Organization and the United Nations headquarters in Geneva and New York also attended.

The symposium dealt with several axes, including the techniques used by the translator to find the exact equivalent of the medical term, with the necessity of familiarity with medical knowledge and cultural backgrounds that are indispensable in the formation of a professional translator.

The symposium also addressed the differences between the common term and the specialized term used by specialists and reviewed the efforts to standardize terms made by Arab countries and the unified medical dictionary prepared by the World Health Organization.

Prof. Dr. Salwa Rashad stressed the importance of such seminars that contribute to refining students' knowledge and skills in the field of specialized translation and preparing them for the labor market, not only at the local level, but also at the international level.

For his part, Prof. Ashraf Attia, Vice Dean for Postgraduate Studies and Research, pointed out that the importance of this symposium lies in the fact that it deals with a pressing topic, which is the translation of medical terms and health texts that have become public talk in the last two years in light of the spread of the Corona pandemic, which was the cause of the circulation of many medical terms on the tongues of the public and filled the terms Medical is an important place in the daily political and media discourse.

His Excellency affirmed the keenness of the graduate studies sector at Faculty of Al-Alsun to strengthen cooperation with translation departments in international and regional organizations to exchange experiences and encourage students to make more efforts to raise their scientific and practical level in the field of translation.
