He later traveled to France to pursue further postgraduate studies, earning his Ph.D. in Electrical Power Engineering from Grenoble University in 1986.

Returning to academia, he progressed through the academic ranks at Ain Shams University, beginning as a Teaching Assistant in 1975, followed by Assistant Lecturer in 1980, Lecturer in 1987, Assistant Professor in 1994, and Professor in 2000, before becoming Professor Emeritus in 2014.

This progression reflects a long academic journey that took him from the lecture halls as a student to teaching, research, and academic leadership, establishing him as one of Ain Shams University’s distinguished scholars who have made a lasting contribution to electrical power engineering.

Academic Leadership and Experience Inside and Beyond the University

Prof. Talaat previously served as Head of the Department of Electrical Power Engineering at the Faculty of Engineering, Ain Shams University. His academic experience has also extended to other educational institutions in Egypt and abroad.

He currently serves as Professor at the Department of Electrical Engineering at Future University in Egypt. He previously served as Professor at King Saud University in Saudi Arabia from 2007 to 2014.

His responsibilities have also extended to quality assurance and academic accreditation, where he served as Director of the Quality Assurance and Academic Accreditation Unit at the Faculty of Engineering, Future University in Egypt.

Electrical Power Engineering: The Focus of His Research

His scientific and research interests have focused on power system operation, control, stability, and protection, fields that are fundamental to the development of electrical power grids and to enhancing their efficiency and reliability.

His interests have also encompassed distributed generation and microgrids, alongside the application of artificial intelligence techniques to power system analysis, control, and protection.

These applications have included neural networks, knowledge-based systems, genetic algorithms, and fuzzy logic, as well as real-time applications in electrical power systems and machines and the use of optimal and adaptive control techniques to enhance power system stability.

More Than 80 Research Papers and Projects

Prof. Talaat has built a substantial body of scientific work spanning several decades, publishing more than 80 research papers and technical reports, both independently and in collaboration with other researchers.

He has also completed several research projects as a principal investigator and researcher, contributing through his work to addressing issues related to the development, protection, and control of electrical power systems.

He has supervised numerous master’s and doctoral theses in power system operation, control, stability, and protection, while also teaching a wide range of specialized courses to undergraduate and postgraduate students.

Artificial Intelligence in the Service of Power Grids

The application of modern technologies in power engineering represents a prominent aspect of Prof. Talaat’s research career, particularly his interest in employing artificial intelligence techniques in power system analysis, control, and protection.

His research has explored the use of neural networks, genetic algorithms, fuzzy logic, and other advanced technologies to enhance power system performance and improve their ability to address a wide range of challenges.

His research has also extended to smart grids, renewable energy, distributed generation, and microgrids, keeping pace with global developments in modern energy systems.

From Scientific Research to Practical Application

Prof. Talaat’s career has not been limited to academic and research work; it has also contributed to strengthening the connection between the University and industrial applications.

One notable example was his participation in 2014 in a project to design and establish the Digital Protection and Energy Management Systems Laboratory at the Faculty of Engineering, Ain Shams University, sponsored by Schneider Electric.

The laboratory provided advanced equipment and technologies that helped enhance practical experiments for undergraduate and postgraduate students and introduced them to modern control and protection technologies used in electrical power grids.

This model reflects an important aspect of his academic philosophy: transforming engineering knowledge from theoretical content into practical experience that benefits students and researchers.

A Presence in International Scientific Forums

Prof. Talaat’s scientific contributions have extended to several international institutions and organizations. He served as a member of the Electrical Technical Committee of the Saudi Building Code.

He also chaired two committees of the International Electrotechnical Commission, Committees 49 and 93, reflecting his presence in international technical and scientific circles related to electricity and energy.

He was also a member of the Egyptian National Committee for Electricity and Energy Research at the Academy of Scientific Research and Technology from 1999 to 2001.

Reviewing Research and Academic Programs

Alongside his scientific publications, teaching, and supervision of researchers, Prof. Talaat has contributed to evaluating scientific research and academic programs.

He has served as a reviewer for several international scientific journals, including publications affiliated with IEEE and IET, as well as specialized journals in electrical power systems and energy research.

He has also participated in reviewing undergraduate and postgraduate academic programs at Egyptian and Arab universities, drawing on his extensive academic and scientific expertise.

A Scientific Career Beyond Borders
