Faculty of Al-Alsun Explores the Behind-the-Scenes World of Film Translation During Translator’s Day Celebration, Featuring Writer, Translator, and Screenwriter Amr Hosny

As part of Ain Shams University’s commitment to strengthening the connection between academic studies and professional and creative experience, the Faculty of Al-Alsun, through its Department of English Language, organized a Translator’s Day celebration featuring translator, poet, and screenwriter Amr Hosny. The event was held under the patronage of Prof. Youmna Safwat, Dean of the Faculty of Al-Alsun, in cooperation with the Faculty’s Community Service and Environmental Development Sector. It was attended by Dr. Nehal Nagy, Head of the Department of English Language, along with faculty members, undergraduate students, and postgraduate students.

The celebration highlighted key stages in the guest’s professional and creative career, beginning with his experience in journalism at Al-Ahram newspaper and extending to his work in poetry, translation, and screenwriting. He also discussed the major influences that shaped his literary outlook, particularly his extensive reading of Arabic literature and the works of prominent Egyptian poets, including Salah Jahin and Fouad Haddad.

An interactive discussion focused on Amr Hosny’s experience in translating and dubbing animated films for Walt Disney. He explained the nature of film translation and the linguistic and creative skills it requires, which go beyond literal translation to include adapting dialogue to suit the characters, dramatic context, and cultural differences. He emphasized the importance of preserving the spirit and artistic essence of the original work while making it accessible and appropriate for Arab audiences. The discussion also addressed the main challenges facing translators in this field and the need to balance faithfulness to the original text with the linguistic and cultural characteristics of the target audience.

Amr Hosny stressed the importance of continuous reading, openness to different cultures, linguistic flexibility, and the ability to creatively adapt and express meaning. He described these qualities as essential for successful translators, particularly in literary and audiovisual translation, where linguistic accuracy must be combined with artistic sensitivity and cultural awareness.

The event also gave students an opportunity to interact directly with the guest and ask questions about his professional experience and the skills required in different fields of translation. This exchange helped broaden their practical knowledge, develop their skills, and connect the academic concepts they study with real-world challenges in the job market. It also introduced them to various career opportunities available to graduates of the Department of English Language.

Organizing the Translator’s Day celebration reflects the Faculty of Al-Alsun’s commitment to hosting scientific and cultural events that enrich the educational experience, strengthen connections with professionals and creative experts, and prepare graduates to meet labor market requirements. These efforts also reinforce the role of translation as a bridge for cultural and civilizational exchange between peoples.
