In Collaboration with the Ministry of Health and Population and the World Health Organization, The Faculty of Medicine Organizes an Awareness Event to Promote Meningitis Prevention

Under the Theme “From Awareness to Effective Action,” the Faculty of Medicine Promotes Health Awareness Among Students and Corrects Misconceptions About Meningitis and Its Prevention

Under the patronage of Prof. Mohamed Diaa Zain El-Abedeen, President of Ain Shams University; Prof. Ali El-Anwar, Dean of the Faculty of Medicine and Chairman of the Board of Directors of Ain Shams University Hospitals; Prof. Hala Sweid, Vice Dean for Community Service and Environmental Development; and Prof. Rania Salah, Vice Dean for Education and Student Affairs, the Department of Medical Microbiology and Immunology at the Faculty of Medicine, headed by Prof. Laila Khalifa, organized a scientific and awareness-raising event entitled “From Awareness to Effective Action: Strategies for Meningitis Prevention,” in collaboration with the Ministry of Health and Population and the World Health Organization (WHO).

The event reflects the commitment of Ain Shams University and its Faculty of Medicine to promoting health awareness, fostering a culture of prevention among students, and highlighting the importance of early detection of meningitis and appropriate responses to its symptoms, helping to reduce the risks and complications associated with the disease.

The event attracted strong student participation and engagement through a series of interactive awareness stations and activities organized by the Department of Medical Microbiology and Immunology team. These activities are aimed at simplifying medical information and communicating essential health messages in a scientifically accurate and engaging manner.

The program featured awareness stations explaining how meningitis spreads, its most common symptoms, and the appropriate steps to take when infection is suspected. It also included an “Ask Your Doctor” corner, where students could raise questions and receive reliable, evidence-based answers from medical specialists.

Real-life clinical cases of meningitis patients were also presented to demonstrate how certain symptoms can resemble those of other diseases and highlight the challenges that may delay diagnosis. Particular emphasis was placed on recognizing warning signs and seeking medical attention promptly to prevent serious complications.

The event also dedicated a segment to addressing misconceptions surrounding vaccination and explaining its role in disease prevention in accordance with established medical recommendations. Students were encouraged to verify medical information circulating on social media and rely on official, credible sources.

Activities further included a “Learn and Play” station featuring specially designed crossword puzzles to reinforce students' understanding of essential information about meningitis. This interactive educational approach combined learning with participation, helping students retain key messages in a simple and engaging way.

Such initiatives demonstrate the integration of health education with evidence-based medical practice. They also highlight Ain Shams University's Faculty of Medicine's commitment to fulfilling its community service mission and strengthening cooperation with national and international healthcare organizations. These efforts contribute to promoting health literacy, encouraging preventive practices among students, and safeguarding public health.
