Ain Shams University Strengthens Academic Cooperation with Al-Jazeera University in Somalia, with Prof. Sherif Elwan Participating in the Inauguration of the Postgraduate Studies Department
Under the cooperation agreement between Ain Shams University and Al-Jazeera University in Mogadishu, Somalia, Prof. Sherif Elwan, Professor of Ophthalmology at the Faculty of Medicine, Ain Shams University, participated in the inauguration ceremony of Al-Jazeera University’s Postgraduate Studies Department, at the University’s invitation and in recognition of his academic and advisory role in postgraduate education.
The establishment of the Postgraduate Studies Department builds on the academic efforts led by Prof. Sherif Elwan, which contributed to the launch of the master’s degree in Ophthalmology at Al-Jazeera University in 2020. The program has since graduated 15 ophthalmologists who are currently practicing across Somalia, reflecting the impact of academic cooperation between the two universities in supporting and qualifying Somali medical professionals.

During the inauguration, Prof. Sherif Elwan delivered a speech highlighting Ain Shams University’s experience and role in supporting medical education and postgraduate studies, while also reviewing prospects for further academic cooperation between the two universities. He also serves as Advisor for Postgraduate Studies Affairs at Al-Jazeera University.
The ceremony was attended by Ambassador Mohamed Salah, Ambassador of the Arab Republic of Egypt to Somalia; Dr. Farah Sheikh, Somali Minister of Higher Education; Mr. Ilyas Kumar, Somali Minister of Legal Affairs and Justice; several members of the Somali Parliament; Dr. Sheikhdon Elmi, President of Al-Jazeera University; Dr. Abdelsamad Hai, Dean of Postgraduate Studies at the University; as well as a number of academic leaders and officials.

These activities are part of the cooperation agreement between Ain Shams University and Al-Jazeera University, which aims to expand academic and scientific collaboration through joint academic activities, the establishment of dual-degree programs through both in-person and distance learning, student and academic exchanges for research and academic study, as well as personal skills development programs.
This cooperation reflects Ain Shams University’s commitment to expanding its international academic partnerships and strengthening its role in supporting higher education and building scientific and professional capacities, contributing to the transfer of Egyptian expertise and supporting educational and medical development in fellow countries.
