14 Gold, 13 Silver, and 8 Bronze Medals: A Remarkable Sporting Achievement for the University in Its First Participation in the African University Games
Ain Shams University’s Education and Student Affairs Sector achieved a remarkable sporting milestone in the University’s first-ever participation in the 12th African University Games “Cairo 2026,” hosted by Egypt for the first time. The University secured seventh place overall, winning a total of 35 medals: 14 gold, 13 silver, and eight bronze.
The Games witnessed broad African participation, bringing together 2,082 participants, including 1,688 students and 394 officials, representing 18 countries and 82 universities. Competitors took part in 18 sports, alongside four para-sports and three demonstration sports, making “Cairo 2026” a major continental sporting platform distinguished by the scale of participation, diversity of competitions, and accompanying activities.
These achievements came under the patronage of Prof. Mohamed Diaa Zain El-Abidin, President of Ain Shams University, and Prof. Rami Maher Ghali, Vice President for Education and Student Affairs, with administrative coordination and supervision by Mr. Ibrahim Saeed Hamza, Assistant Secretary-General for the Education and Student Affairs Sector, under the umbrella of the Education and Student Affairs Sector, the General Administration of Youth Welfare, and the Sports Activity Department.
Ain Shams University participated in a wide range of individual and team sports, with its students delivering outstanding competitive performances and securing an impressive medal tally. These results reflect the University’s wealth of promising sporting talent and its students’ ability to compete at major continental sporting events.
Securing seventh place overall and winning 35 medals in its first participation in the African University Games underscores Ain Shams University’s strong sporting presence, reflecting the importance the University places on university sports and the support and care provided to students and sports teams by the Education and Student Affairs Sector.
This achievement is the result of sustained efforts by the Education and Student Affairs Sector, the General Administration of Youth Welfare, and the Sports Activity Department to prepare teams and athletes and provide the necessary support for participation in competitions, further strengthening Ain Shams University’s presence at major sporting and youth events.
It also reflects Ain Shams University’s belief that sports constitute a key pillar in shaping university students’ character alongside academic excellence. The Ain Shams University Student Dormitories hosted the delegations and missions participating in the Games. The Education and Student Affairs Sector worked to ensure the highest levels of preparedness, services, care, and hospitality, providing a suitable environment for the delegations throughout their stay.
Ain Shams University also mobilized its human resources, logistical capabilities, and various facilities to support the success of this continental sporting event, showcasing the distinguished image of Egypt and its universities and reaffirming the University’s ability to host and organize major events efficiently and professionally.
The University’s role also extended to the cultural dimension through organizing and hosting cultural activities at the delegations’ accommodation venues. These activities contributed to strengthening cultural exchange and communication among students from African universities and supported the Games’ objectives of building bridges of communication and cooperation among universities and young people across the continent.
Ain Shams University also participated in the sporting, cultural, and artistic activities accompanying the Games. Ahead of the competitions, the University organized a major celebration featuring the ceremonial handover of the Games torch, reflecting the significance of the event, its sporting and cultural value, and Egypt’s message of fostering stronger ties among African university students.
