Ain Shams University Hosts Orienteering Competitions with African Universities Participating in “Cairo 2026”
As part of Ain Shams University’s participation in the 12th African University Games “Cairo 2026,” represented by the Education and Student Affairs Sector and the General Administration of Youth Welfare, Sports Activities Department, the University hosted the orienteering competitions from September 14 to 16.
The events were held under the patronage of Prof. Mohamed Diaa Zain El-Abedeen, President of Ain Shams University, and Prof. Rami Maher Ghali, Vice President for Education and Student Affairs, with the coordination and administrative supervision of Mr. Ibrahim Saeed Hamza, Assistant Secretary-General of the University for the Education and Student Affairs Sector.
The General Administration of Youth Welfare hosted training sessions for the competition on September 14 and 15, while the official competitions kicked off on September 16, with male and female athletes from universities participating in the African University Games.
In the team competitions, the Universities of Canada in Egypt (UofCanada) secured first place and the gold medal, while the University of Ghana finished second and claimed the silver medal, and Uganda’s university team placed third and won the bronze medal.
In the women’s individual competition, Malak Ismail of the Universities of Canada in Egypt (UofCanada) claimed first place and the gold medal, while Malak Raafat of Cairo University finished second and won the silver medal. Sondos Mohamed of the Universities of Canada in Egypt (UofCanada) secured third place and the bronze medal.
In the men’s individual competition, Youssef Khaled of Capital University claimed first place and the gold medal, while Seif Ismail of the Universities of Canada in Egypt (UofCanada) finished second and won the silver medal. Mostafa Abu Amer of the Universities of Canada in Egypt (UofCanada) secured third place and the bronze medal.
Orienteering is a sport that combines speed, intelligence, keen observation, and sound decision-making. Competitors rely on map-reading and compass-navigation skills, along with the ability to select the optimal route to reach designated control points in the correct order before crossing the finish line in the shortest possible time.
Ain Shams University’s hosting of the orienteering competitions underscores its active role in organizing and hosting events of the African University Games “Cairo 2026,” as well as its commitment to supporting university sports and providing a well-organized environment for participating delegations and teams, thereby fostering interaction and sporting competition among students from African universities.
